Technique Issues

Unread post by JaDaRu » Fri Jul 30, 2004 3:07 pm

I was wondering if anyone could help with a problem I've always had. I usually hit way too many strings when I'm strumming, usually a bass string too many or too many muted "squeeky" high strings. Take the chorus of Sattellite for example. I have a trouble hitting just those two strings for the slide, so it doesn't sound as clear. Does anyone have any advice on how to remedy this (other than practice, cause I have)....

Thanks

Jason

learn to mute with your other fingers, thumb, palm of your hand, arm, feet, teeth, pets, or anything else that will mute the strings.

yeah, just takes time but be sure and work on the muting. itll make you sound awesome doing really simple stuff if you can mute like a mofo.

i hear ya. you may practice attacking/targeting certain strings more in your strum. might cut out some of the mute noise if you hit less muted strings. i dunno though...

remember to relax your strumming hand too, so you're not fighting the strings when you strum... i've found that with dave's style, the muting is important obviously, but being able to pick the specific strings throughout his strumming style is just something that comes with time....also, dave strums down close to the bridge of the guitar for most of his songs (higher pitch) where the strings are more level and makes it easier to snap your wrist for a good percussive sound...

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

strumming closer to the bridge also gives ya that twangy sound.

anyway, its one of those things that only comes with practice.. and i dont really think you can practice doing that specifically. you just have to keep trying to play stuff and itll come naturally.

a lot of times with guitar when you dont practice stuff for a while itll get much better for some strange reason.

i picked up a Gibson Les Paul Classic today and decided i would work a little on a solo i hadnt played in a while (Fade to Black by metallica.. the intro solo)

i hadnt been able to play that fast part cleanly, but today i did it pretty stinkin well. better than id ever done it.

dont wear yourself out trying to practice that. just keep playing and itll come to you.

Yeah when I suck or get frustrated, which is often, I take a break and come back to the song and I usually can play it better.

you really need to concentrate on your strumming precision. like for a D chord. practice switching from D to G and only hit the 4 strings
