Help the bassist play guitar

Unread post by i like tictacs » Thu Jun 17, 2004 9:41 am

So as you all know...I have played bass for about a year now. I have a pretty good handle on chords, theory, whatnot. However as of late i am playing my accoustic more and more. thing is it's a total piece of shit. i think it will help me to understand the music a little more to play both, as im in a band and yadda yadda. What should I get started on, legitimatley, at first? I can play some dave songs, and some non dave songs. is there anything in particular i need to know, like, basic chords, etc? just trying to get off on the right foot here.

Well, do you know the open chords?

And barre chords, either played with the bass of E or bass of Am are just an E or Am chord slid down with your barre finger acting as a capo almost. Play an E open chord, then slide your fingers down one fret and barre the first fret now youre at an F barre chord. B and E are the only notes that dont have sharps so as you continue moving down the neck in barre chords, you go from E open, to F, F#, G, etc. you can figure out what your playing that way. I dont know if thats understandable, if you want help just get me on aol like you said. I just took a guitar class in college so now I know a little more than I used to theory wise, Im no expert at all compared to many people on here, but I know some stuff, and Ive taught beginners before.

I just don't know all the technicalities perse. I know scales, and the notes, and half step, whole step, yadda yadda, flats sharps etc. everything that uses one string at a time, from bass. I'd just like to expand a little bit on the guitar. so if someone says "play chord xyz with xxx" i know what he's talking about.

hi tictac....

personally.....learning barre chords was a huge jump in my limited playing. after learning how to do the "E" form and "A" form barre chords and their variations.....the fretboard opened up big time for me. i was no longer stuck at playing chords on the first three frets....and all of the sudden i could play the same thing all along the fret board and even mix the different chords just to get some better practice in. it just depends on where you start your barre and what formation you use...and it basically names the chords for ya. before barre chords i only knew the basic open chords and when it came time to play a song that had...C#m (or something ya can't form on the first three frets) i was like what the hell? but now i just think to myself....barre it! hope that helps.

im in the same boat as you mike, i play bass in a band and started just casually playing guitar a few months ago...anyway, i dont know what kind of band your in, but if yall do any acoustic songs, ask your guitarist to teach them to you, learning to play the guitar part of a song youve written a bass part to is cool and also helps you realize things you might not have known, on both bass and guitar.

go out and get a book called 'Fretboard Logic SE' by Bill Edwards, it will be the best $20 dollars you have ever spent. It's a book about a thing called "guitar mechanics" as opposed to Theory.

the book teaches you how with the 5 basic chord forms (C, A, G, E, and D) you can create almost unlimited variations of almost any chord. and then it goes on to teach you how these chord forms are connected by scales and that by learning 5 scale forms you can be pretty much covered because they all link together across the fretboard. then it goes on to teach you arpeggios, how to build chords and a little bit about reading music. and it's only 100 pages long so it won't be too hard to get through.

but the main thing about this book is that it teaches you HOW to play as opposed to WHAT to play. it doesn't waste your time with songs you don't want to learn or EZ versions of songs that you do. it gives you all of the tools you need to be a great guitar player.

hey ticatacs me and you have liek the same story. I started on bass and went into acoustic. Basically what helped me were my brothers who were like infinelty better at me at both instruments. I just stared at them and Isaid I could do that..

but anyways, what I just did was taught myself both instruments. Get to know the basics, chords, notes, strings, yada yada yada, but it sounds liek you know that.

Just learn some basic songs, Dave Matthews is great becuase he has nice chord progressions then screw around
