Newbie post - learned dave now what?

For good fingerpicking, Simon and Garfunkle songs (or Paul Simon solo). Beatles are always good, try fingerpicking Julia, or nice struming picking, like Norweigen Wood.

I'd like to give you one non-song related suggestion: take lessons if you can. Find a good teacher (older ones are actually better, I've found) and learn to read music. When you read music, you can not only read a wider variety of stuff (as most artists publish sheet music), but you can be more interpretive, leading to songs of your own!

That's one of the things about music that fascinates me: I can always do something slightly different but sound cool.

Hey Everyone,
Thanks for all the posts and ideas they've really helped me out alot. Alot of the artists that have been mentioned I have played some of their stuff before and others I have been going through my cd/mp3 collection and rediscovering songs I might have missed. I think my biggest problem is that I like too much music and I try to take on to many new songs at once instead of focusing on getting one or two "under my belt". About the taking lessons part, I've always wanted to but I always end up never getting around to it due to time constraints and money issues but eventually I will get a teacher and tackle this theory stuff. Lastly I'm really glad I started this post. I've been on the boards ever since I found dmbtabs.com but I've never posted anything b/c I was a little intemediated by my lack of knowledge and what not, basically I didn't want to sound like a dumb ass. The positive responses that I got from everyone has put that to rest and hopefully I will be more active and up front in asking questions.

I second the incubus suggestion. They do some nice sounding interesting guitar work. Also I would recommend checking out 311, they're way off from the Dave vibe but a good band I think. Also if you want to try some lead guitar look at some Pink Floyd, Gilmour writes amazing solos that will really teach you how to make notes flow together well.
