Sting at the oscars

For anyone who saw sting peform at the oscars, what instrument was he playing? it looked to be about the weirdest thing i had ever seen and i have no idea how it works or even what sound it was making. pics would be cool. thank you

its a hurdy gurdy, i was wondering the same thing and my dad somehow knew what it was.
