NEED HELP WITH RECORDING
Hello everyone. Happy New Year! So.. I need some help. I want to start recording myself on video and posting on youtube and sending the videos to loved ones who don't live near. My question is... What is a good set up that does not cost millions of dollars? I am looking for something with good picture and of course great sound. I am hoping to stay under fourhundred dollars... Any advice would be great! Thanks so much, Jim

I will assume you don't have a mac/macbook. If you did, it's pretty simple just to just iMovie and garageband to edit the sound. The built in iSight would capture the video for you.
If you have a PC though, you can record with a regular video camera and then upload it to Windows Movie Maker. Then you can edit the sound with Audacity or a free program like that. You can also buy a webcam (I recommend logitech) and use that to capture the video. Those cost anywhere between 40 and $80 for a decent one. Make sure you can find an open source program out there that will utilize the webcam as a video camera before going through with the purchase. I know iMovie has that capability but I'm not sure if any PC programs do.
Next for sound you'll need an audio interface devise. I recommend t.c. electronic Konnekt 8. Only downside is that it's $300. There are plenty of other audio interfaces out there to choose from. M-Audio is a solid brand and so are any of the M-boxes (those come with Pro Tools, a top notch audio software).
Now that you have these, make sure when you record your song, you have the audio interface plugged in while your camera is recording. That way you can extract the audio from the video files and insert the polished audio from your program. And that is pretty much how I do it. Good Luck to you sir.

are you runnin mac or pc?
Oh and I forgot about the mic. I use an AKG condenser mic (bout $130) but I recommend the SM 58 because it doubles as a great stage/practice mic too. Those run about 100 bucks. It's an expensive hobby sadly if you're looking for better audio. Of course there are ways around some expenses but purchasing lower quality equipment. Just research it before you buy it to make sure it's reputable.

J2, What is your priority here? Video or recording audio? Is it just you and an acoustic guitar playing "live takes"?
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?
