Getting my acoustic recorded into my computer

Unread post by DSeibel » Tue Feb 03, 2004 2:28 pm

Guys

I wouldn't mind recording my acoustic playing into my computer. How would I go about this. I could play into the mic, but what about a sound hole pick-up patched directly in? Would a better sound card with a higher quality mic channel produce better results? What about software?

Thanks Dave

With a pickup you could get 'clearer' sound, but just ask J. Page. Acoustic insturments need to have room to breathe when they are being recored. The best sound (IMO) would be to find a quiet room with good acoustics and put a mic 5 or so ft. in front of the guitar.

Yes, up to a point the better quality equipment you use, the better results you will get. I use SB Audigy Plaitnum, and a Sure mic. Good enough. Software, I use CEP 2.0. A $250 mic will not sound any better when being input into a shoddy recording device.

Get an external mixer and a decent vocal mic, then if you want a sound hole pickup get a Fishman Neo-D (I have it, it' svery nice, actualy, best sound hole, and doesn't make it sound like an electric). I would get an amp too (tube or something that simualtes tube amps) then, you are going to want to send all the stuff into your Line In (not mic in). That's what I do.
Yes, I am in a box

i agree. i have tried both the soundhole pickup straight into the mic channel as well as the mic into the channel picking up the acoustic...and the latter produces a much better sound.

It's also cool to blend the two options. Record direct to the board and also record from an ambient microphone at the same time and blend the signals together. You get a real nice guitar sound this way. It doesn't sound as harsh as direct recording sometimes sounds, and you still get interesting texture.

Would a electronics store, or a guitar store have that adapter? (from winglet's post)

Guitar stores have them usually , and that list price around 4$ seems to be an average in the US , personally i bought mine cheaper here in Denmark , which was a HUGE surprise as everything is more expensive over here , but i paid about 1$ maybe 2$ for mine :)

I dont have a pickup on my acoustic, so is it possible just to play into a mic and record it using the audacity program?

Just one more question, is it possible to layer guitars with this audacity program? Like lay down a rythm track and put some lead over it? Thanks again
