I dunno, it seems like some people write songs alot faster than others. I take quite a while to write a song, whereas my friend will have new one or two every week. I dont get it-

It tends to come in quick burst's of inspiration for me. Finishing a song is something I'm not familiar with yet.
I'm just a perfectionist and I put so much time into it that I get tired of what I'm playing and move on.
My advice is to not take any inspiration for granted. Many of the best songwriters say they always have a pen and pad ready to go cause you never know when a great melody/lyric will come to you.
Write down everything cause you never know if something you right today will fit with something you write 6 months from now. That way you don't even have to address writers block cause you have a whole catalouge of "thoughts" waiting to be made into songs.
I think a big mistake people make is being to complacent and satisfied with themselves. There are times (has yet happen for me) when you can write a whole song with almost no effort and it's a great song but just like anything in life greatness usually takes a lot of blood, sweat, and tears.

writers and poets recommend the pen and pad thing, too. everyone can use it. we always think up the craziest ideas at the most inconvenient of times.

i have a text file on my computer that's gotten to be about 100 pages long from random thoughts that pop into my head. i go back and scroll/skim through if i'm feeling drained.

as for writing a song with no effort, a lot of people feel that those are their best songs. they slip into a mode where they're connected with their words, instruments, whatever and they pull out a great song. the muse croons and sways in them for a brief moment, and those moments are encouraging. i've only had one song that came out like that that's still needing some work, so nothing's ever finished or done, like great writers say about their works.

it all depends, really, on your creative mood, what's going on in your life, etc. everyone's found their way of getting over music block.

for me, it's taking a break from music to do other things. when you're stumped on homework, you usually take a break and start fresh at it again from a different perspective than before, and i think the same applies with most everything within the same line of thought.

Thanks guys you really helped alot...i think i just think about things too much. So i sat down today and just strummed a few chords and it turned out into something nice...a break from the instrument is a good plan, as well as just letting what ever you play flow out naturally. You have to have the bad stuff as well as the good as i see it now. If you clear out of your head the riffs that you dont like that always come about things certainly turn out better. Letting yourself go on the instrument and breaks away from it deffinetly helped...thanks guys :D

no problem. glad to be of service.

and remember, you're going to write something like 30 crap songs before you write a good one. don't be too hard on yourself, because i always am on myself when i write a crappy song, but i get better with each one.

As Paul Simon says, "Great songs arent written, there re-written again and again until its great!" All I know is you cant force it, you just kind of have to let it flow. I usually write a progression, and play with it until the inspirado comes to me and tells me what the song is trying to say. Dont be afraid to write crap either, sometimes theres a nugget of goodness among a big pile of shite.

Do as Bela Fleck does

when you come up with a melody, find the closest phone, and call your house and sing the tune to your answering machine. Swear to god it'll work.

 that was helpful.

anyway, Kevin, i know how that is. my mom just purchased a nice little pda for me for 70 dollars and it's wonderful. i can jot down notes real quick or hit a button on the side and it'll record an audio clip and it helps in tracking the creative process quite a bit.

There're periods of inspiration in which I FEEL the exigence of writing something...but there're also periods of "scarcity": I don't have written anything for about 1 year!!!
I think it's the same for music...
