I actualy have a thumb pick, where it slips on your thumb, and this one has a normal type pick attached. It's nice if you are fingerpicking, and you need a loud low sound to pluck the E string.

it looks like this from the side:

First off I'm a begginer on guitar so by all means, my advice might not be the best. With that said...

Instead of palming a pick take the pick in your hand like you normally use it. With your thumb slide it down your index finger and then curl your index finger in so the pick is "wedged" in between the joints of your index finger. You can also do it the same way with your middle finger, which would prob make more sense if you were finger picking. See if that helps...

I usually fingerpick, and THE BEST WAY to strum with fingers is to do it flamenco sty-lee:

Grow some fingernails on the right hand, and stum with all 4 fingers like you are swating something away, and use the thumb for all upstrokes. Sounds great and no annoyance from hitting the strings wrongly when you make the pick shape.

oh, and the brand of thumb pick I use is Herco. It also helps from having the pick slip. It makes it so much easier to have a pick and able to fingerpick as well.

hold the pick in your mouth...then grab it. there will most likely be a drum fill before any chorus...

Flamenco all the way. Such a nice way to control attack and whatnot.

If you take a look at the video from Aol session you'll see that John hide is pick between is finger ... so he can switch from fingerpickin to strumming pretty fast .

Fingering acts as a natural volume. And keeps my kids from waking up :)

just put the pick flat inbetween your pointer and middle finger, then just slide it out when you need it.
