Open Mic Night Suggestions

Unread post by StayOrLeaveIU » Mon Jun 23, 2008 2:27 pm

I'm playing an open mic tomorrow night and was looking for some good suggestions. I searched and found some good advice but does anyone have any actual song suggestions? I played my first open mic last week and sang Grey Street and a couple O.A.R. singalongs. Thanks for your help!

Just play whatever you want. Kind of a really broad question.

If you have any originals, I'd throw a couple in there. Covers are fine, but they should either be ones that you do well and everyone knows, or obscure ones that you do ridiculously well. But hey, if the crowd is receptive, then I suppose it doesn't matter. I'd just rather hear original stuff than another hack version of a Mayer or DMB tune.

Ya I know its a broad question... Sorry about that. I might throw an original in there, I just have to build up the confidence to do so. Thanks for your advice though.

Do it. Covers are far less interesting than original work.

I played in my first open mic a couple of weeks ago and I played some covers and kinda fucked up....well really fucked the first one but and kinda the second one, The sound guy told me I had a few minutes left so I played an original and I was much more confident. I was really nervous when I first got up there and I was screwing lyrics up so I decided If I play an original and mess it up, noone will know because they've never heard the song. That helped me relax and I think people seemed to like it more than the covers, either that or they were just happy that I was done. Either way, I say go for it and play some originals.

I played the same open mic as Ian and agree.

Definitely stay away from O.A.R.

Don't let him kid you. He did fine. And the original was very good.

Thanks Kristin. You were there? I didn't even realize you lived in Lexington. Was that you with Ryan?
