A fake book is a giant tome of specific songs. A jazz fake book contains jazz standards and other types of jazz music. Basically, the melody is written out and the chords are above the measures of the songs. It's called a fake book because, in general, you are supposed to be able to read the melody and play the chords on the spot. You're supposed to bring em to gigs and if someone requests a song that happens to be in the book, you look at the music and "fake" the song (as if you already knew it). They are just handy to have if you are ever in need of a particular song that you want to learn. I was expresses my love for it because it has a load of songs that i was looking for.
And to answer the question that I am sure will come: no, there are no tabs in a fake book
and the reason they are shady about it is because its not exactly legal...

because they usually have about 500 songs in there. do you have any idea how impossible it would be to go ask all those artists for rights the their music?crash_in_to_me wrote:why?fatjack wrote:and the reason they are shady about it is because its not exactly legal...
