Cutouts
I noticed Dave's signature Martin does not have a cut out. On songs like Stay or leave where he is up on the 15th to 17th fret how the heck, how does he play it?

When is he on the 17th and 15th fret in stay or leave? Did I miss something?
But if you don't have a cut out, it can still be done, it's just really awkward. . You just have to bend more of your hand/wrist/arm around the front of the guitar. If my memory serves me right Timmy does it on the Storytellers video...

Dave will play most of his set on his DM3MD but always switches to his Taylor 714 that is set up in Raised B tuning for songs like Stay or Leave and Oh. I don't think I've ever seen him use a capo. Snyder was right. If you look at the Storytellers video you'll see Timmy go way up the fretboard of his D35. I guess all you have to do is practice.

I think that they are for Dread's, but as for GA's, I think that they look better when they have a cutout body, and not a full body, but to each his own eh?crash_in_to_me wrote:i think cut outs are ugly

with my dread (no cutaway) i have to play 1 or 2 things up at the 19th fret.. its not easy, but i can do it.
dread cutaways do look quite ugly, but GA's, GC's, and even jumbos look good with them. sometimes jumbos can be bad though... however i do like a jumbo with a florentine cutaway.

i really dont understand why timmy doesnt play with a cutaway, at some point during the concert I was at his hand was parallel to the strings, just seems like its unneccessary to work that hard when a cutaway is a simple solution
