Dave's Guitar from Woodstock 99'

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Dave's Guitar from Woodstock 99'

Unread post by Doron Diamond » Sun Jan 12, 2003 9:08 pm

For anyone who has seen the video of Dave Matthews playing #41 at Woodstock 99' what guitar is he using! It look so amazing to me. It's thin, a beige color, an Acoustic Electric I think? For anyone who can identify it, can you also tell me if it's a good guitar (I mean it seems awesome) and how much they cost? Thanks a ton!

Also, while I'm at it, I might as well ask...

In that video, Dave plays all these different chords for #41. I thought it was just

Am Bm Em D over and over again and then G D C for the chorus. Any help here? Thanks a ton, I love this site:)

Gibson Chet Atkins SST.

I believe that they go for about $1000 new. Dave had some modifications to his. He also owns a black one and a blue one (i think). I believe he had the neck and the pickup changed.

As for if they are any good...there are generally mixed emotions about them. People either hate them are they love them. I got the Epiphone (cheaper and worse quality) version as a gift. It's fun as hell to play, but does not compare to my Taylor.

I hope I helped. If I was wrong soemone will correct me!

Hey there,

Thanks a ton for the help. Any specific reasons as to why some hate it and some love it? And, as for the Epiphone you have, how much "worse" is it, and how much was it? Thanks again for any help.

Chet

Unread post by cave_cricket » Sun Jan 12, 2003 9:41 pm

Some hate the "tinny" sound of it. Some hate that it is so heavy. Others feel that it is not orth the $ that it goes for. I agree that I would not pay $1000 for a Chet. You could get a Taylor 314ce for that price and I feel that it is way better.

As for my Epiphone...it was a gift so I'm not sure my parent's paid for it..i think around $200. I believe that the electronics aren't as good as the Gibson and maybe the materials. I 'm not too sure. Someone else would have to tell you that. I can only say that it is fun to jam on.

Peace,

Dont get one of these unless you have wayyy too much money to throw around, or if you gig and you've tried one out first. As stated, dave made some pretty heavy modifications to his chet to make it sound the way it does. The one you buy wont sound the same. Theyre fun, but not very versatile. For that price, you can get an acoustic with a pickup in it that will sound a lot better, and you'll be able to play it without an amp if you want.

I really am sorry. I don't mean to be a pain, but I JUST started guitar 5 months ago, and I barely know a thing. But around how much do you think I'd have to pay if I wanted a very good Acoustic/Electric guitar, or an Acoustic with a pickup in it? Like what's the lowest I can pay and still get a really good one? Thanks a ton.

Ihaven't played one, but I have heard only good things about this guitar. It's a great price and has great electronics in it.

go to "Alvarez acoustic guitars" and look at the Fusion series. They are the ones am talking about.

dave's chet sst

Unread post by Wherehouse41 » Thu Jan 16, 2003 12:04 am

okay, this is my opinion.
i have a chet which i have been playing for about 3 years. i would only suggest buying one if you've played one, and if you have a middle to top end acoustic amp. i have a Fender Acoustisonic Jr. amp which is nice enough, and my chet sounds awesome coming from it.
i payed 1,000 and it was a year old (used) at the time. they list for around 2,800, but you will probably pay around 1,500 for a new one. i have the black one, and the stars (on the neck) come standard no matter what color you get. the major thing about this guitar is that it gives no feedback, so if you are in a band, or group, you can go as loud as you want without screeching. it is an awesome guitar (if plugged in).
so if you have the money, and another guitar to play (that doesn't need to be plugged in), try one out, and see what you think. good luck man. take it easy... peace

If there is someone that is a huge Brian Setzer fan, they're probably gonna tell you to get a hollow body. If someone is a dave fan, they're probably gonna tell you to get a chet, martin, or taylor. If someone is into a Lenny Kravitz sound, they're gonna tell you to get some vintage Gibson. The point is, find what you like and try to get a guitar that suits that sound and the sound of the music you want to play. The people on this message board aren't playing the guitar you buy, you are.
Good advice.

i really dont get why dave likes to use gibsons so much... why would you use a gibson when you could use a taylor.. it doesnt make sense.. winglet ovations are pretty nice and affordable.. the rounded back sucks but for the price its got a good sound.. i liked the 12 string ovation i played better than the martins ive played..

He hasn't used the Chet in some time. just Martin and Taylor since awhile now. But that Chet was really cool, in my opinion - it was modified and had acoustic strings - very funky
good, and you?

HI all!!!!! :D I'm new the forums. Just a quick THANK YOU FOR MAKING THE BEST DMB SITE THERE IS again, Thanks for all the work Jared.

I used to have an epiphone, one of my first guitars. I wouldn't buy one again. They do sound "tinny" or "shallow" in my opinion. Although they do have an interesting neck (shaped like a V). I also own an Alverez WY1, designed by Bob Weir from the Dead. I've played Taylors, Martins, Santa Cruz, as well as many others. I wouldn't trade my Alverez for anything, cept maybe another one. The Virtuoso series has A LOT of bass much, more than other acustoics I've played. A very "thick" or "Fat" sound. See the link below for a pic. This is also the same guitar that Ani Difranco plays, if you wanna know what they sound like. If you need something on the cheap, check out http://www.takamine.com, they sound pretty good and are cheap.
