Newbie looking for suggestions
Hey y'all, I'm just starting out guitar and was hoping that I could get a few suggestions as to what Dave song I outta start with from you all. Also, any tips on finger exercises or stuff like that would be very much appreciated.
Thanks a bunch

Hey....as for finger exercies, I cannot really help you there. Check out the links section of the site. There should be some good links to guitar sites that would have.
In terms of Dave songs to learn when starting off. Practice the Satellite riff, it will get your fingers stretched and is good practice for Dave songs. It may be hard at first but it's a good way to practice some Dave stuff. Songs that are pretty easy are the following:
Song That Jane Likes
Watchtower
Typical Situations
There are more but those are pretty easy and should get you started.
I HIGHLY SUGGEST that you check out the Dave Style Lessons on the site. It will help you GREATLY in lerning Dave's style. He has a lot of tendencies in songs to do a lot of the same things and those lessons will help you out. Alright....Hope that helps....ENJOY!!!

I would start with the Song that Jane likes because it uses basic open chords that you should be learning early on anyways.
It's a G C F Am D progression.

like JKanter said, use those three songs and try satellite, it's definitely not easy to begin with but if you get that down it will make a lot of the other songs with similar stretches easier to play and get the rhythm down faster...and use the dave style lessons, I've been playin for a couple of years now and it's always good to get a new tip here and there...good luck bro

Huge thing that helped me was practicing the pentatonic. Do a search... someone showed me this i usually run up and down the fretboard until my pinky is at the 14th fret. Every web page says to go up and down at the 5th fret(good to start) but for a more complete way i start at 1 and go down and move one fret over and go up and move over and go down... kinda hard to explain...
E|--1---|-------|-------|---4---|
B|--1---|-------|-------|---4---|
G|--1---|-------|---3---|-------|
D|--1---|-------|---3--|-------|
A|--1---|-------|---3---|-------|
E|--1---|-------|-------|---4---|
when your pinky hits the 4.... slide over to 5 on the hi E and move up and so.... if this doesnt makes sense let me know
gets finger working independent and real strong...
hope this helps

I had the same problem you are having when I started. My first DMB song was crash. There are many different ways to play it, but get a tab book and make sure that you get the right strumming rhythm. These are some of the other songs that I find easy to play... in order from easiest to somewhat harder (at least for me).
Proudest Monkey
Typical Situation
Satelite
Lie in Our Graves
Granny
Tripping Billies
One Sweet World Intro
Stay
The Stone
Warehouse
The thing that I felt helped the most is breaking the song down into small parts. Like The Stone.. which I think is really easy once you break it down. It looks really intimidating, but take it slow and practice it. I would get Satelite down before attempting The Stone. Also, the Pentatonic scales are great for strength and speed.
Hope this helps

Its cold as hell outside
But our fire is bright
And in your eyes
I can see what is on my mind
You got me wild
Turned around inside

I can see what is on my mind
You got me wild
Turned around inside
