Sing and Play, Hey La La

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Sing and Play, Hey La La

Unread post by climzalot » Fri Oct 11, 2002 5:06 pm

I was wondering if anyone who has been doing it for a while and possibly taught others how to, has any tips on how to teach yourself to sing while playing the guitar Dave style. When my mouth opens my hands stop moving and vice versa. Any tricks for developing this ability or am I retarded and SOL.

Thanks

There is no real way to teach or learn to do both, you just have to prctice on really easy song and get good at them. After about a year or two (or more) you should be able to pick up ANY song you know and sing it while playing. The trick is to start small; something like the Stone is crazy to start out with! Also, you can try playing easy chords for song like for instance, one of the first songs i got to be fluent with was #41...but it was a real easy way...the open "cowboy" chords/ Am, Bm, Em, D. Try easy stuff...the strumming is the hard part!!!

With the first few songs, it's nothing more than learning the guitar part well enough where you don't have to think about it. You can just stick your hands on autopilot and concentrate on the words.

After you get a few songs down, it gets infinitely easier. There will always be some songs you have to work at.

One thing that helped me out, is try singing the words in your head while your playing, and then try singing aloud whilst playing.

Yeah do that..but try gettin the guitar part down first, make it automatic so while you're tryin to sing you dont really ahve to think about playin the guitar and you can concentrate more on the singing...somethin like typical situation tho is really easy to play but to sing and play is a totally different story, hitting the notes in the right order throws me off completely, i suggest finger picking with that one it makes it a lot easier...#41 is not too bad eitehr the verse is really easy or crash, just have to change the bass notes and thats about it

Thanks all. Very good suggestions. Something to spend some time working on for sure.
