So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Dave chord question

Unread post by fenster1977 » Sun Dec 21, 2003 2:50 am

Newbie here, so sorry if this has been covered.

I've been practicing the DMB tabs on here for a while and I've gotten alot of them down pretty good. It seems Dave uses four particular chords alot:

-----------------------------------
----------------------------------
---7----4---6---2-----------------
---x----x---x---x----------------
---x----x---x---x-----------------
---7----3---5---2------------------

I've learned to play these in Grey Street, Tripping, and So Damn Lucky...but I have no idea what chords they actually are. Can anyone help here?

thanks

I've dedicated a section of the site to the particular style of guitar Dave plays. http://www.dmbtabs.com/lessons.php?id=1 That is the link tot he "Dave Style Lessons". A direct link to answer the question you have is: http://www.dmbtabs.com/lessons.php?id=3 . NOW, it doesn't say thos chords specifically(because I forgot the x's on both a & d chord)....but the naming of them goes exactly for what the lesson says(just w/o the note on the A string)...

ENJOY!

I've seen that section, and it definitely helped alot when I was learning. But my question is what you would actually call these chords. For instance, if you HAD to but letters to them so someone could strum, what would they be?

Not that I want to strum these songs, far from it. I'm trying to learn them the right way. But it helps to know where on the scale I am. I'm sure there's a formula for figuring out chords by what individual notes make them up...but I don't habe that much theory under my belt.

Thanks for the help...and great site!

Just take the bass note I guess...7=B,3=G,5=A,2=F#. Now these are not fully accurate, but it gives you some point of reference...

the 7xx7 style ones are minor, and the 2xx3 style ones are major.

Generally, whether you try to or not, most of the time the D string rings. This would make that last chord D/F#.

So....Bm, G, A, D/F#
