prodest monkey

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I I have always played it with my fingers, and since it is so simple, I get bored, lol. So I don't know how to alternate pick that one at all. Actualy, it's much easier using fingers than alternate picking like on satellite (unless you are going really fast like timmy, which is the one of the only times he uses a pick)

So what your saying is there is no difference between 1/8 and 1/4 notes at the same tempo?

No, everyone knows that's not true. I meant it doesn't matter which way you're picking, up or down. It doesn't matter!!!!!! Striking the note from above is the same as from below...

so what your saying is if you are playing at a tempo of 100 beats per minute and you play all down strokes vs. alternate picking they are the same types of notes? I disagree, downstrokes would be considered quater notes and upstrokes would be considered upstrokes. If someone else could clarify it would be appreciated...

That doesn't even make sense...I can play downstrokes as 1/8 notes. It matters how fast you strum. I really don't know why you can't comprehend that a song like proudest monkey, which is pretty slow, can't be played with all downstrokes...On this song I can play just as fast with JUST downstrokes as you do with alternate picking...Just because you are alternately picking doesn't mean you are playing faster...You follow the beat...This is so pointless.

i play it on all downs...but IF you were gonna alternate pic, you'd need more ups in it.

no, you were right

fallon, your teacher was probably refering to the way alternate picking is usually used. it feels more natural to downstroke on the beat and upstroke on the upbeat, that way your hand keeps a steady eighth note motion. but cold is right about that fact that this is song is so slow it doesn't matter. whether it be an upstroke or a downstroke, it just depends on when you choose to hit it

so just pick whichever way feels natural, just as long as you are playing the correct rhythm

Yeah, I agree. He was probably just trying to help you keep a rhythm as FJ pointed out. I didn't even think of that. Alternate picking is practically necessary for faster picking though. Sorry for all the confusion.

Funny how we make simple things complex, probably part of my problem, over thinking :)
