Help with Ants
Help with Ants
I have the song down pretty good except for the palm muting during the verse after the D and G chords. I just can't seem to get the percusive sound like from Storytellers. I guess I need help with palm muting. Can someone give me some pointers?

Re: Help with Ants
I've practiced this song for a year and half straight and finally feel like i've got it...the muting in this song, is the same/similar quick muting in Rhyme in reason between the stretch chords at the end of the verse riff...to get a good tone, i strum down towards the bridge of the guitar where the strings are tighter and have a more 'crisp'/ high pitch sound...Dave strums down past the pit of his guitar for many of his songs to get that high pitch, but it's very effective also for strumming muted chords and getting a crisp percussive sound...try it out and see if there's a difference...good luck, fun song to play!Gombo wrote:I have the song down pretty good except for the palm muting during the verse after the D and G chords. the above is a good tactic to learn for Dave songs, I find that this comes into play in a lot of songs...
also Dave's strumming hand is adding to the mutes/percussion, he keeps his middle finger open (while everything else is closed) so it allows him to quickly lay his hand over some strings and essentially it's both hands that make him such a good percussive player - but damn hard to emulate!
now that I've realized this - I'm re-teaching myself songs/parts of songs, and it's helping me with my whole rythm of the song and I'm finding it easier to sing now with this style of strumming...

yeah, just mess around with it - sometimes you can combine the right and left hands for the mute - I've only been able to get it (Ants) to sound like Dave a few times (out of playing it a lot) and when that happens, take notes on what you did and try to break it down, that's what I have started doing...Gombo wrote:Thanks for the help. So for each of these three mutes it's done with the right hand? I've been trying to do it with the left side. If I bar my left hand I can get the sound but it's not the way Dave plays it. He just flails away and it's hard to see what is going on.

Not to fully contradict what Monkey said...but from what I've seen, Dave doesn't really mute with his strumming hand. If you want the sublties of his fretting hand.....all that amazing muting is done w/ that. The strumming hand lends to the muting by strumming a certain way, but he generally does not rest his hand on the string to mute at all. I say this because his hand is ALWAYS MOVING and it's damn fast....there isn't much time to mute w/ his strumming hand. That's my take on things......Jason, agree???

you described it way better, I didn't really mean he rests his hand on the strings cause like you said he is strumming the whole time (usually) but he kinda "helps" the muting by grazing the strings on the way by...(why didn't I write this before

the fret hand is still the key to muting though, you're def right...
anyway, sorry if my other post was leading you the wrong way Gombo...

Kanter, you may or may not agree...similar strumming/muting patterns in this song compared to "Stay"??? The muting i find is definitely similar to get the correct sound...just my opinionjkanter wrote:Not to fully contradict what Monkey said...but from what I've seen, Dave doesn't really mute with his strumming hand. Yes...I agree, I also agree with monkey who also said that it's similar to Rhyme and Reason. Both of those songs(Rhyme and Stay) are pretty good examples of what to do. Just rest(keep moving, but don't fret) your fingers on the strings as you strum to get the mutetjmac66pc wrote:Kanter, you may or may not agree...similar strumming/muting patterns in this song compared to "Stay"??? awe i said R&R originally...c'mon man give credit where credit is due!! geez!!! haha j/k...you're right though the constant motion it key... what a fun style to play!
kanter, do you vary how you play the chorus for ants?? or is it the same strumming pattern every time?? this is probably hard to convey over message boards...if you can't answer, i'll just see it when i buy your dvd

First off, sorry I didn't credit you correctly. I just scrolled down as I was posting. Next off.....hmmm, do I help you or make you buy the DVD?!?!!?!? Ha, well, I do vary it because I feel it needs to be varied depending on what's being sung. That's what I think at leasttjmac66pc wrote:awe i said R&R originally...c'mon man give credit where credit is due!! geez!!! haha j/k...you're right though the constant motion it key... what a fun style to play!

good point...it does matter if you're feeling lively or more laid back singing...i'd probably have the tendency to really jam wildly with a full band than performing solo...and as for the DVD thing, i'm gonna buy it anyways...so one way or another you're gonna help me dammit!! haha
