#41 help

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

#41 help

Unread post by Huskilson » Thu Dec 10, 2009 3:35 pm

I recently just started learning guitar and was told 41 was a fairly easy song to start with it is in fact my favourite dave song anyway, is there any tips on playing it because i find when i play it the bottom strings sound very rough it could be my inexperience but i am wondering if dave usually mutes the high e string or not.
Any help is appreciated.

The intro or the verse?

That intro is a killer stretch for most people, let alone a beginner.

The verse part. I agree it is quite the stretch in the intro.

He does mute the high E string. The way I do it is whatever finger I am using to play the bass note, for example in the first chord in the verse you use your index finger to play the bass note. so what i do is press the low E string with my index finger and then rest the rest of the finger on the strings, for the next to chords it is your middle finger and then back to you index. if you would like a video Private Message me with you email.

Yep, even though I figured this out on my own, I agree with you completely. It will sound like a disaster if you don't mute it. Either that or limit the range of your strum as not pick it up just in case you don't mute it. I do both when I play the song.

And yes, that stretch at the beginning is a long one, but it is a pretty good exercise and one you get it down, it makse alot of other Dave songs kind more bearable to play because he stretches quite often.
