Big Whiskey Tabs (so far)

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Big Whiskey Tabs (so far)

i just assumed i wouldn't be back here after feeling very "meh" about all Dave's Stand Up parts, but here i am again

here's what i've come up with for the new tunes.

Why I Am:

Why I Am, by Dave Matthews Band
Tab by Adam Hanley (adwolf16@aol.com)

This song has some pretty interesting things going on - lots of abrupt time changes and variations on its central riffs/chords. So rather than try to tab it from start to finish, I decided first to lay out the main pieces of the song, and then explain how those pieces fit together afterwards.

Intro/Walkdown:

e----------------------------------------|
b------1-----1-----1------1-----1-----0--|
g----2-----0-----0------0-----0-----0----|
d--3-----2-----0-------------------------|
a--------------------3------2-----0------|
E----------------------------------------|
                       [xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]

Verse:

e------------------------------|
b------------------------------|
g------------------------------|
d--------5-----------5---5--5--|
a------------------------3--2--|
E--3---3---3---3---3---3-------|

Chorus:

e------------------------------|------------------------------|
b------------------------------|------------------------------|
g------------------------------|------------------------------|
d--------5-----------5---5--5--|--------5-----------5---5--5--|
a------------------------3--2--|------------------------3--2--|
E--3---3---3---3---3---3-------|--3---3---3---3---3---3-------|
                         ****                           ++++

*Played 6/8
+Played half-speed

Post-Chorus:

e------------------------------|---------------|
b------------------------------|---------------|
g------------------------------|------0-----0--|
d--------5-----------5---5--5--|----2-----4----|
a------------------------3--2--|--3-----5------|
E--3---3---3---3---3---3-------|---------------|

Pre-Bridge:

e----------------------------|
b------1------1-----1-----0--|
g----2------0-----0-----0----|
d----------------------------|
a--0------3-----2------------|
E---------------------3------|

Bridge:

F, Am, C, G
[F, Am, C, Em]
F, Am, C, G
F, Am, C, G

Ending:

e------------------------------------|
b------1------1-----1-----1----------|
g----2------0-----0-----2------------|
d------------------------------5-5-5-|
a--0------3-----2--------------5-5-5-|
E---------------------1-----3--3-3-3-|

Structure (all sections played once unless otherwise noted):

1) Intro
2) Verse (x10)
3) Chorus
4) Post-Chorus, Verse
5) Repeat (1)-(4) (verse only x6 this time through)
6) Walkdown (excluding notes above the brackets) (x3), Pre-Bridge

Note: I added 1/8 note beats under the verse sections because Carter is doing some stuff in there that makes it very tough to find the beat (if

it helps you keep track, he tends to hit the snare or give a rim click on 1, the second 1/16 note of 2, and 4).

After watching a couple videos here is what I can see Dave playing:
______________________________________

INTRO:

---------------
---------------
---------------
--7--5--5--3---
--x--x--x--x---
--5--3--3--1---
______________________________________

VERSE:

-(0)-3--3--1--
--1--0--0--1--
--2--0--0--2--
--2--0--0--3--
--0--2--2--3--
--x--3--3--1--

at MSG he went to this for later verses...

-(0)----------
--1-----------
--2-----------
--2--5--5--3--
--0--x--x--3--
--x--3--3--1--
______________________________________

CHORUS:

----------------(1)-
----------------(1)-
-----5--5--4--4--3--
-----x-(0)(0)-x--2--
--2--3--x--x--2--2--
--------3--3-----1--

(that first B note is hit on the upstroke as a pick up to the first "C" chord)
______________________________________

POST-CHORUS:

----------------------------------
----------------------------------
----------------------------------
------3-3---------2-2-3-3-5-5-7-7-
----------3-3-5-5-----------------
--1-1-----------------------------
______________________________________

BRIDGE: (not 100% positive on this one, I see his fingers moving a little bit but he may just be muting the strings)

----------------------
----------------------
--7-7--3-3--5-5--2-x--
--x-x--x-x--x-x--3-2--
--5-5--1-1--3-3--3-x--
-----------------1-x--

----------------------
----------------------
--7-7--3-3--5-5-----
--x-x--x-x--x-x--5-5--
--5-5--1-1--3-3--x-x--
-----------------3-3--
______________________________________

Click on the thumbnail of Carter and watch that vid.

Can anyone tab out how Dave plays Why I Am in that vid? I really like what he's doing, and it's different then the tabs I've seen. Not sure how he plays it live, but I imagine this is how he'd do it in a D&T setting.

if that's the vid i think it is (can't watch it on this computer), it's an early draft of the song -- or at least the verse is. for the verse, he does the main G riff the same, but then jumps up a 4th and plays it based on a C chord, which they don't do in the final version. and for the bridge, he's just playing the bar chords arpeggio-style and not playing any of the chords open (which he may do live too - i just tabbed the Am, C, and G open because that's how i'm used to playing them; to do what he does in that vid, just play the barred on the 5th, 8th, and 3rd frets).

i'm also working on Beach Ball, which i'm pretty sure is in raised baritone.

Heres a much clearer video. Someone qualified can take over...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQtJpzsRaIY

-------------------------------
-------------------3----1-----
------------5----------------
---2--------------4-----2------
---2-------7------5-----3------
---0-----------------------

Really not sure about that second one, may be the same chord sequence in the So Damn Lucky Chorus.... I dont know such names.

--2----2----------------------------------------
--3----3----3------------------2----------------
--2----2----------3-----3-----2----------------
-------------2-----------------2-----------------
-------4----3-----1------------------------------
------------------3------1----------------------

I dont know man, its what it looks like hes playing. Looks like he does something with that A chord at the end too. And I dont know about that third chord. I dont know about that first through sixth chord. maybe a pinkie on that E string in the first half of that A.

Oh shoot its a different tuning... Failure.

does anyone have a good video of DMB playing Why I Am, because this:

Code: Select all

e|---------------|
b|---------------|
g|------0-----0--|
d|----2-----4----|
a|--3-----5------|
E|---------------|
is not what Dave plays. I can see in a youtube.com video that he is moving down the neck, not up. It sounds like Tim might be playing something like this, but Dave is not. I can't make out the fingerings because the video too low of quality to see that clearly. Anyone got any good quality videos?
