Help with famous Dave chords......

Unread post by delab » Tue Aug 12, 2008 9:21 am

Chords 1 and 2 below I’ve been using for some time. Chord 3 and 5 I play but don’t know what it is. Can you guys help?

Chord 1

E:-----
B:-----
G:-10-- <---4
D:-x--- <---1
A:-8---
E:-10-- <---3

So, if chord 1 is D minor…………

Chord 2

E:-----
B:-----
G:-11-- <---4
D:-x--- <---1
A:-9---
E:-10-- <---3

And chord 2 is D major………

Chord 3

E:-----
B:-----
G:-10-- <---4
D:-7--- <---1
A:-x---
E:-10-- <---3

What is chord 3?

Chord 4

E:-----
B:-----
G:-11-- <---4
D:-7--- <---1
A:-x---
E:-10-- <---3

And is there such a chord as this? If not, can you see where I’m going with this? What should the chord be? If there is such a chord as chord 4, what is it?

Chord 5

E:----
B:-7-- <---4
G:-x--
D:-4-- <---1
A:-6-- <---3
E:----

And what chord is this? What are the combination of derivatives with the chords based on the A string?

It would be really helpful to have a better understanding of what I’m playing…… I hope I’ve asked the question correctly or if not I hope you see what I’m getting at.

Chord 3 would be D major, just a different voicing - a different way to play the chord (the notes are D F# A = Dmaj).

Chord 5 would be an (implied) Eb minor chord. You only have two notes, Eb and Gb (Eb Gb Bb = Ebm chord), so technically it's not an actual Eb minor chord since a chord consists of three notes.

Yeah taparoo is right, I screwed up the explanation in my first post. It is just a different voicing of the same chord. D minor is that D note on the E string, then two F's played with it DFXFXX. You take the root note then taking the minor third and you get F and that is why you're playing 8 on the A and 10 on the G. Say you wanted to build from the note B in the same way. Make the B the 7th fret then add two D# (two whole steps from B). Easiest two D# from that position would be 6th fret on the A and 8th fret on the G. You happen to end up with a Dave chord finger position again, this time a major chord though. If you take the minor third instead of the major 3rd you end up with the OTHER Dave position and... see you see where this is going. It is just so he can do the progressions that he does with minimal movement up and down the neck. See the changes on the Recently intro, the Raven chorus, etc.

I still probably screwed up the terminology so help me if I'm wrong fellas... Just look into chord building information and you'll get it. There are a lot of good threads I've read in the past dealing with it. Try searching the forums for some theory discussion.
