Dave Chords (Billies, Grey Street etc.)

Unread post by kheiman » Sun Sep 30, 2007 9:35 pm

Quick question...How exactly does Dave play the chords in Grey Street, Billies, and other songs with those particular chords? I play them by keeping my finger 3 on the G-string, and alternating between finger 1 and 2 on the low E-string. From watching videos, I've learned that Dave plays these songs differently. Any word on how to play them the correct way?

From what I've seen, Dave usually plays Grey Street like this (fingerings are up top)

Code: Select all

   4 2 4 2 2 4 2 4
   3 1 3 1 1 3 1 3
E:----------------------------------
B:----------------------------------
G:-7----4---6---2----4---6---2---4--
D:-x----x---x---x----x---x---x---x--
A:-x----x---x---x----x---x---x---x--
E:-7----3---5---2----3---5---2---3--
Here's the fingerings for Billies

Code: Select all

   2 4 2 4 4 2 2 4 2 4 4 4 etc
   1 3 1 3 3 1 1 3 1 3 3 3
E:----------------------------------------------------------
B:----------------------------------------------------------
G:-2---4----2---4---7---6---2---4----2---4---6---7---2---4--
D:-x---x----x---x---x---x---x---x----x---x---x---x---x---x--
A:-x---x----x---x---x---x---x---x----x---x---x---x---x---x--
E:-2---3----2---3---7---5---2---3----2---3---5---7---2---3--

Thanks a lot for that, I think I'll stick to my way since it's easier. Dave's way sounds much more clean however.

Daves way also looks cooler. I usually use his way when I play those songs in front of people, but by myself I'll use the way you do.

Dave's way helps you develop finger strength in your pinky that you may not have. Plus it definitely sounds cleaner with less sliding

Dave is pretty much just amazing. Seeing him 11 times now and being as close as 2nd row at Alpine...he makes me wanna learn to play better and to sound just like him. He is amazing...no doubt
