should I get a teacher?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Question on my mind...

Did dave teach himself how to play the guitar...or did he have a teacher?

I don't think it should matter in the very least whether or not Dave had a teacher (he did) for you to decide whether or not you want one.

I'm pretty sure Dave taught himself. But having a teacher can really help you out. I'd say go for it if you have the time and money.

Dave definitely had a teacher that also helped him develop some of his early songs. I don't remember what his name is. That said, don't do it just because Dave did it...

do what is right for you, not dave. if you think you need a teacher, get one.
if you think you are better off teaching yourself and like saving the fund, then
teach yourself.

He probably taught himself. But im sure his stuff wouldn't be the same without Tim Reynolds helping him learn and play.

You are not correct sir. Its always better to read up on the shit you're speaking about just to be sure you not talking out your ass
Dave did take a few years of lessons when he was younger(9-12ish). Dave didn't meet tim reynolds until probably late 91', maybe 92. I hope it can be assumed that dave had his technique down well before he met tim reynolds.
I think you should take lessons if your young and willing to learn and have the oppoortunity. When i took lessons, when i was young, my teacher told me that i will never learn how to read music and that i should just either give up or figure it out on my own. so i don't know shit about music, but i can play just about everything i put my mind to. Its all relative to how you will yourself to learn. Some learn solely by booksmarts and studying. I learned by copying and practicing. If i could i would learn music but by now i'm not willing to. Playing by ear is my thing.
I say give it your full effort with lessons and see where it puts you. Then, you'll know for sure

 ....Yah know your shit before you post. I remember watching one of those all about Dave shows, one of his friends said when dave was around 9 or so, " he could miss school, but never did he miss guitar/piano practice". Dave & Tim are two very different muscians, but sometimes when you mix cheese and peanut butter..damn it tastes good.

he had a teacher from the age of 10, i regret not having more teaching, you cant really master the guitar without one, you can play licks and songs, but the theory makes sense of it and you get a broad understanding with lessions

daves uncle said "he had no problem with missing school but he would never miss a guitar lession"
Gervais on Rosa Parks "she was arrested but then that law was changed- but she didnt stop there, she started sitting in the seats saved for disabled people. unbelavable, she talked to the driver when the bus was in motion- did she have the correct change ready? - did she bollox!"

in an interview with a radio station i beleive in 2001, he said something along the lines that he never really understood/learned theory and that he looked at the guitar as more of a dance floor that he danced his fingers around...(not exact qoute)....i'll try to up the audio later im at work now and got some shit to do later. (plus not really good at figuring out how to upload audio)

It all depends on what your musical goals are. If you want to be a play by ear type of musician, then you shouldn't really NEED a teacher. But if you want to know the theory behind it and really KNOW what you're doing, then get a teacher.

I am currently going to school for a music performance major (guitar) and I have learned so much already, even though I'm just a month into my first semester. Plus, I have benefitted from being around so many talented musicians.
