should I get a teacher?
should I get a teacher?
Question on my mind...
Did dave teach himself how to play the guitar...or did he have a teacher?

You are not correct sir. Its always better to read up on the shit you're speaking about just to be sure you not talking out your assYakko wrote:He probably taught himself. But im sure his stuff wouldn't be the same without Tim Reynolds helping him learn and play.

Dave did take a few years of lessons when he was younger(9-12ish). Dave didn't meet tim reynolds until probably late 91', maybe 92. I hope it can be assumed that dave had his technique down well before he met tim reynolds.
I think you should take lessons if your young and willing to learn and have the oppoortunity. When i took lessons, when i was young, my teacher told me that i will never learn how to read music and that i should just either give up or figure it out on my own. so i don't know shit about music, but i can play just about everything i put my mind to. Its all relative to how you will yourself to learn. Some learn solely by booksmarts and studying. I learned by copying and practicing. If i could i would learn music but by now i'm not willing to. Playing by ear is my thing.
I say give it your full effort with lessons and see where it puts you. Then, you'll know for sure

he had a teacher from the age of 10, i regret not having more teaching, you cant really master the guitar without one, you can play licks and songs, but the theory makes sense of it and you get a broad understanding with lessions
daves uncle said "he had no problem with missing school but he would never miss a guitar lession"

Gervais on Rosa Parks "she was arrested but then that law was changed- but she didnt stop there, she started sitting in the seats saved for disabled people. unbelavable, she talked to the driver when the bus was in motion- did she have the correct change ready? - did she bollox!"

in an interview with a radio station i beleive in 2001, he said something along the lines that he never really understood/learned theory and that he looked at the guitar as more of a dance floor that he danced his fingers around...(not exact qoute)....i'll try to up the audio later im at work now and got some shit to do later. (plus not really good at figuring out how to upload audio)
It all depends on what your musical goals are. If you want to be a play by ear type of musician, then you shouldn't really NEED a teacher. But if you want to know the theory behind it and really KNOW what you're doing, then get a teacher.
I am currently going to school for a music performance major (guitar) and I have learned so much already, even though I'm just a month into my first semester. Plus, I have benefitted from being around so many talented musicians.
