Tips and Advice

Unread post by buttermuffin4 » Sat Nov 18, 2006 4:31 pm

I'm not a newbie to music in general, just to Dave's style of guitar.

I know music theory and all that stuff so, feel free to speak in guitar lingo.

I'm looking for tips, hence the title, haha, how do y'all play it?! I've having so much trouble with it! I don't know maybe my left hand is all screwed up because sometimes my fingers do get stuck.

So, any advice would be greatly appreciated for a dm playing amateur, the only songs I can play is the verse to #41 and Crash.

Well, you're probably going to hate me for saying this, but Practice! The more you play those rhythms and those painful chords, the more you'll develop and play those things easier. That's the only thing I can give you on playing Dave tunes in general. If you need help on a specific song then there could be some other tips some people could give you.

Start with the easiest ones (look for a couple of existing threads about that).
For the left hand, make sure you use the fingers pointed out in the tabs. That will be a tremendous help.

I actually found it more difficult to catch the "right hand feeling" of Dave's style.

Good luck on that!

Yeah, it definately takes some endurance to play some Dave tunes. His picking hand is always moving.

I dont want to sound like a dick either but there really isnt that much advice. You need to just practice like no tomorrow. For some people they can pick up faster and others it takes longer. You just have to download some videos of Dave playing solo and just watch what he does. Listen for his mutes and the biggest things watch how he never stops strumming. Even if he is hitting single notes he is most of the time strumming fully and muting all the other strings. Thats how he gets his sound.

Im assuming since youre a small girl (judging by your pictures) that youve got pretty small hands. Some of the stretches might be quite a pain, youve really just gotta get used to stretching your fingers out quite a bit for the Dave chords.
