It's clichéd and all, but practice practice practice. I played the intro until I got so sick of it I couldn't listen to the song anymore (and it's my favorite by far of DMB's music) and eventually it became automatic, my hand just naturally stretched far enough. You can get away with letting your index finger rest on the 5th fret on D and mute G like this:
Code: Select all
e-----
B--8--
G--X--
D--5--
A--7--
E-----
But you're better off learning a 4 to 8 stretch.
Edit: Look at the timestamp. Did I break something? :-X

I have fairly long fingers but I can barely make this stretch. Will my hands loosen up if I practice doing this or will it always be difficult for me? Also, what do the parenthesis around the fingering position notation mean?
Intro
E:--------------------------------
B:---------------8---3--3----3----
G:---5-----7-----4---x--0h4--0h4--
D:---2-----4-----5---4--x----x----
A:---3-----5---7-7---5--5----5----
E:-5-5---7-7----------------------

youll get used to the stretch sooner or later. the notation is the finger to use.

One thing that helped me get the stretch was to hold the neck like I was chocking it rather than the thumb extended on the back of the neck. My fingers aren't that long and that's the only way that I can make the stretch. But it takes practice and somne pain no matter how long your fingers are.

You should definetly do some finger stretching excersises , no one can do that for you

You just gotta keep practicing until you can stretch it that much , can be hard at first though

for a bit i would skip the 4 on the 7-5-4-8 chord. It's pretty hard to tell the note isn't played and makes that chord (the hardest chord in the progression) playable. Good luck

i can give you tab that has almost exactly the same sound but almost no stretch, but i'd recommend that you play it the way dave does, it will be good for your playing.

I don't have a clue but for months now I have struggled to learn #41 and like the rest of you that is my favorite song but yesterday evening it clicked and my fingers are sore today form stretching but I won't stop now.
