so im trying to learn how to plam mute while learning grave digger. which part of the plam do you use? the whole plam, the meatty thumb portion? when i do it, it sounds so muffled and muddy. any help would be great.

Don't use your "meaty thumb portion" as you referred to it, that makes palm muting more difficult. I don't know for sure, cause I don't have my guitar sitting right in my lap for me to see how I do it, but I'm pretty sure I use the heel of my hand more than anything.

Rest the pinky part of your palm somewhat on the bridge and the strings. This will give you a constant mute when you play. For a more percussive esque palm mute, slap the strings with an open palm.
