Summer '06 Songs Thread

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Experiment with different variations of the chords. Also, Dave doesn't hit that last A chord. He just stays on the D. (Upon second listen, he might hit the A chord occasionaly) I think it sounds better if you include that pulse of the A chord.

Once again, fill this out by playing full chords and whatnot. Dave has a band backing him, so he doesn't really need to, but Joe Shmoe with an acoustic guitar might want to spice it up a bit.

The Idea of You by Claisen
as i posted on ufck. dave obviously plays this differently (high D tuning, equivalent to capoing the 10th fret) but given the source we have now, here's the best way to emulate that sound on a standard tuned guitar. nothing too complicated, but it's a lot of fun to play.

Code: Select all

capo: 5

verse:

E||--1---3-----------------3---|
B||--1---0---1---1---1-----0---|
G||--2---0---2-------------0---|
D||--3---0---2-------2-----0---|
A||--3---2-------2---3-----2---|
E||--1---3-----------------3---|

pre-chorus (with roi's melody):
Code:

E||--0--------|
B||--0--3--1--|
G||--0--------|
D||--0--------|
A||--2--------|
E||--3--------|

chorus:

E||--3----3----3----|
B||--1----1----0----|
G||--0----0----2----|
D||--2----0----X----|
A||--3----2----3----|
E||------------1----|
sit on that final chord emphasizing the highest strings for an extra beat or two before the next verse begins.
bridge:

 E||--3--|
 B||--0--|
 G||--2--|
 D||--X--|
 A||--3--|
 E||--X--|

use the pre-chorus pattern to transition back to the chorus/ending jam.

you can play the final jam with roi's melody like this:

 E||--0---------0---------3----|
 B||--1--3--1---1--3--1---0----|
 G||--0---------0---------2----|
 D||--2---------0---------X----|
 A||--3---------2---------3----|

"The Idea of You" by Dave Matthews Band
Transcribed by Adam Hanley

===========================================================

Note: This song is played on a Gryphon 12-string, which is in a raised D tuning. To get this effect on your guitar, you'll need to throw a capo on the 10th fret -- or, if you've been playing Stay or Leave, You Never Know, or another one of Dave's songs on a raised baritone tuning (B-e-a-d-f#-b), the capo goes on fret 3 (and is much easier to play).

Hey, can you change the 7 on the E of the main riff of Break Free (Drop D) to an open A? I did that for fluidity, but the open A is actually better. Oh and, if you can, change the hammers/pulloffs to slides.
