So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Someone should make this an announcement. Don't limit yourself to playing any certain one because of what you think your playing ability is. Just try, and practice, and some will come easier than others.

That being said, I think Lie In Our Graves and So Much To Say are good starter ones.

I think the first few songs I tried to play where the intro to OSW, which I still cant play fast, and the Christmas song. After I felt more confident I moved to So Much to Say. I recently just started the verse and chorus of that song. But I think you sould play a song that you really like, that way its a song you really want to learn and dont mind practicing it over and over and over again.

what? definitely don't start on those ones. nitro's suggestions are alot better. whether you like the song or not, i'd try Crash because it's a bit of a stretch when you first start off and you can get alot stronger after playing the verse over and over and over. and it can be tricky to get the rhythm down, so it's a good challenge for a beginner.

Try Grey Street, Ants Marching (my first Dave song), or one of Nitro's suggestions first.

My first DMB song was Satellite. Its a good stretching song and will prepare you for alot of other dave songs that require stretches. I agree with Proudest Monkey. I had problems with Crash for along time so I dont know if I would tell someone to start with that song. Satellite is a stretch but the rythym of the song isnt overly complicated.

Go for what you really want to learn. My first song that I learned was Ants Marching but I thought it was kick ass and I wanted to play it sooo badly. Whenever you have more motivation for the songs you really like, just try those. No sense in playing the easy ones first if you really want to learn your favs that are hard.

Go for what you like and the easier ones will be a piece of cake.

Harder ones: (Strictly by opinion) The stone, LIOG, Too Legit to Quit (okay that might not be a DMB song), Two Step. Recently (because of the movements)

Easier ones: Produest Monkey, Grey Street (movements can be tough though), Dreamgirl, American Baby, Typical Situation, DDTW

Medium ones: Crash (the stretch), So Much To Say, #41 (awk hand position),Crush, etc etc..

Agreed. Which is why I recommened it to learn. It's slightly challenging (to play cleanly), yet totally not complicated at all.

it all depends because I think LIOG is easy but SMTS is hard to me. It took me awhile to play SMTS but I was nearly able to play LIOG good the first time I played it. There are alot of things that make one song easy to one person and the same song hard to someone else.

Unread post by neophyte » Tue Jun 27, 2006 11:10 am

Just make the tab your friend and try a little bit of everything... not right away but you get the idea.

Ive only been playing for 7 months or so but have learned to play many of the dave songs(most I cant play all the way through yet though)

My first songs were

Typical situation
Crash
Gravedigger
Stay or Leave(standard tuning version)
Grey street
LIOG
Watchtower

Blah blah
Guitar enthusiast.
