Granny Help

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Granny Help

Unread post by zskdmb » Tue Jun 13, 2006 9:50 am

I'm still working on learning to play - I can play Big Eyed Fish, Christmas Song, and Long Black Veil pretty well as of now. I know, I know, not the hardest songs, but I've decided to learn Granny. I'm having lots of trouble with the beginning part and I'm looking for any further explanation or help that anyone can give me. I can play most of the middle, but I can't get the strumming/picking down at the beginning. Any input is appreciated - thanks.

When I first tried to learn this song I found that first chord and hammer on a little be trickey. It took some practice but I finally got it down....

Here is a good video that Pat did a long time ago that may be helpful

if you want to cheat the Verse/Intro can also be played like this...
(I don't have my guitar with me, so I think this is right)

Code: Select all

e:-2h3---3----2---------------------------
B:-3-----3----3--3/5--5---3-------------
G:-2-----2----2--2/4--4---2-------------
D:-------------------------------------
A:-------------------------------------
E:--------------------------3---2---x--

Yeah, thats a good cheat, it sounds exactly the same with less movement around the fret board. Also, if you have the central park dvd watch it over and over. Granny is fantastic on it.
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

G:-2-----2----2--2/4--4---2-------------
D:-------------------------------------
A:-------------------------------------

Thanks for the video and the cheat - made it much easier to get the gist of it. Still having some trouble with the strumming, but I'll work on it. Thanks again.

I don't know if this is good advice, but try playing without a pick at first (if you already use one). [I can't play granny with a pick.]

Place your thumb and index in "pick" shape and try with that.

I basically feel like I'm "overplaying" each position. It seems like I'm missing something when I play it so I play more or try to quicken up and down strums and it just doesn't sound right. This is probably over-simplified, but I guess I just need a better feel of the up/down strumming pattern.
