What do brackets '()' signify in the tabs??

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Ok, sorry if this seems like a stupid question... But what do brackets signify in the tabs, for example, Long Black Vail:

At the end of the intro there's a (10) it's obviously not a hammer/pull off, so what gives?

Sometimes he plays it, sometimes he doesn't. Use it to figure out what you think sounds best.
