Palm Muting?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Palm Muting?

Unread post by DreaminBassMunky » Thu May 15, 2003 7:56 pm

I believe that's what it's called. Apparently Dave uses it sometimes, and my friend played Seek Up using it, and it sounded really good. I just wanted to know if there was a trick to mastering it. Or at least getting it to sound good?

I live on palm muting...helps me keep rythmn all of the time...and Dave uses it very often...so does Mayer (no such thing - verses)...just gently lay the butt of your hand (down the pinky-side of your hand) and chop...you can fool around with it...gives alot of character to a song in my opinion...

hey....

i've recently become obessed with palm muting.. watching dave on Farmaid '02 you see lots and lots of it and it make his songs all sound GREAT.

can you elaborate on "fool around with it"

or can others please tell me the kind of crazy stuff they pull strum correctly while doin' it..? is it ok if the pick is not perpendicular to the strings anymore??

i want to know.

its good to learn palm muting on an electric but, i think what he meant by "play with it" is that if you mute too close to the sound hole the guitar will make a really dead sound and as you move back toward the bridge it will get louder and louder (while still being muted) and then when you hit the bridge if you lean your hand back it will be a sort of half-mute where the strings can ring a bit but are still muffled...its fun!

usually you want to keep the heel of your hand as close to the bridge as possible.

Also, it doesn't matter what angle the pick is at to the strings. As long as it sounds okay, the angle of your attack isn't all that important. Just do what feels natural, its one of the things that makes you sound like you when you play.

I was fooling around with this a while back and discovered that if i wear a short sleeved top i can use the part of my arm just above my elbow to mute at the bridge and pick or strum half way up the guitar. That's how i play the intro to Howie's "Secret"

My biceps are to big to do that. If I flexed by accident I'd break all my strings.
