Fingering for Crash

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Fingering for Crash

Unread post by SaxMan123 » Fri Apr 28, 2006 10:12 am

How in the hell does Dave do the fingerings for Crash? I was watching the Vh1 Storytellers video and it seems he uses his middle finger to play the bass note on the low E string. I cant seem to get around doing the fingerings like he does it though, is there another way to do it? Also does anyone know where I can get the second part of the show, after Crash because I only have the first part of the video.

I use my middle finger on the A and E strings, pointer on the D, rung on the G, and pinky on the b. It's easier to start on the b string and get your pinky, ring, and pointer down and THEN lay your middle on.

You just gotta stretch and practice. It becomes second nature in no time.

That is what Dave does and I have been trying it, its a lot harder though than the way I used to do it which is a lot dumber because of the fact that I was using my index finger for all the bass notes.

I think using your index for the bass would be harder. Do what I said and lay your fingers on the higher strings first.

Ya know, I never thought to play it that way and let those top two strings ring open like that, I'm gonna have to give that a shot, I hate doing Crash for various reasons, and holding that position for 5 minutes is one of 'em.

With the right amount of practice and dedication, crash is really not that hard at all. I remember when tripping billies was impossible and now i play it like it was "come as you are"

Just get your legs moving to the bass and practice the lyrics and then try playing it all at the same time. Soon enough it will be fun to play rather than impossible.

Good luck.

As everyone's said already, Dave is stretching to the bass E with his middle finger, and with practice (a lot less than you'd think) it becomes much, much easier.

The substitute that wkpggrvn2001 put in will do it, but i figure you might as well just get used to the proper way. The fingering (oh-er) is typical Dave style and you should get used to it if you want to play more of his songs. Also, i'm sure dave lifts his pinky off at a couple of spots in the song - i certainly do - it's where some of the variation in sound comes from. So learning another way is only limiting your options in the long run. Good luck!

If you want to second half of VH1 and you've got MSN send me an email 'khimaros@hotmail.com' and if you're around when i am, i'll send it to ya. can't say fairer than that can i?!

thanks for the nice comments about the crash playing, its gonna sound naff, but its a song i NEVER play, due to its repetitive nature.

ive got the EAN 10c, i live it every time i play (only had it two weeks though)
i love the office , and the american one had got way better. (the best episide is when he steps on a george forman grill and then lecutres everyone about disability)
