Ants Marching Help Please

Unread post by Yakko » Thu Apr 13, 2006 2:29 am

Hey, I'm really a n00b when it comes to Dave, I only know stuff like satellite and Gravedigger. I'm trying to figure out how to play Ants Marching, but I cant get the whole part after the D, then the G. The middle changing chords part is really confusing. Could Someone help me please?

Its just a lot of hammer on's, use a Powertab version of it, you will understand the song easier. Dont even try to play it at full tempo cause its hard at first. Mind you I had no trouble with it and its one of the first DMB songs I ever learned. You need quick fingers in order to get it down pat. Not much going on though really, and the string skipping is easy. How long have you been playing?

I play it using hammer ons, however Dave does do the sliding thing, sounds the same too me though, less thinking involved too in my opinion. Besides I hate doing finger slides for a extended period of time, its a little harder on the fingers imo.

It def. is played w/ slides but if played smoothly a hammeron sounds just the same. I play Christmas Song with hammerons and i think dave uses the slide method.
One thing that helped me with Ants was to learn the rhythm of the song, just learn the D and G chords(hope you got those down) and then just learn the muting at the end of the song where its just the chords. After getting that down slowly incorporate the slides. You should also watch d+t storytellers of Ants. If you don't have it i can upload it for ya. Goodluck.

Good Advice.

I use slides, just take it slow, figure out the pattern. Play it over and over and over again after a couple hours your ants will be marching.

I have the music video of Ants, although its hard to get a good perception of what Dave is playing. I was trying Ants up to tempo with the slides and its a hella lot harder than playing it with hammer ons.

I started guitar in the summer of 2003, although I have been doing music for about 6 years now though mainly as a saxophonist/clarinetist. However even in the last 3 years I barely touched DMB tunes until last summer when I started off with Where Are You Going and Grey Street, although I had learned Gravedigger as a acoustic solo piece for my guitar class just after Some Devil came out, since its sort of a finger style tune. Once you learn some of the harder tunes, Ants is actually really easy compared to Warehouse which is probably one of the harder songs, up there with JTR and Proudest Monkey or The Stone.

I'm multitalented too. I play sax, guitar, piano, bassoon, and flute. I still play Ants with a slide though.
