Beginner in need of help

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Beginner in need of help

Unread post by JW » Sun Mar 05, 2006 1:03 am

I got my first guitar like 6 months ago, and as soon as I got it, I knew the only thing I wanted to play was Dave's stuff. It just seams like all other stuff bores me too much. I have had my guitar for 6 months, but I didn’t start practicing every day until 2 months ago. I discovered this site like a week ago, and it is amazing.
Ok, as far as my problem, I can't figure out how Dave strums constantly on songs like ants marching, yet you have to hit single strings in certain parts. Many of Dave’s songs are like this. I can play ants marching by strumming the D, then picking out the rest, then strum the G, and so on.
So, is Dave muting the un-needed strings when playing, or is he just hitting one string while constantly moving his hand? Or is he coming down on the single string he wants to hit, and then muting the rest of the down strum?

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that I am sorry if there is a post already out there that answers my question. I tried a search, and I could not find anything.

He's doing exactly what you describe. He mutes the unfretted strings, and strums. Not all the strings really though, more like...around the area. Like, you wouldn't strum the high E as hard as you'd strum the low e if all you were playing is the low e...if at all.

And did you email me a while back? I sincerely apologize for not getting back to you. I was honestly going to, but I just forgot. Sorry.

Thanks for answering my question. I was almost sure he was muting strings, but I wanted to be 100%
By the way, I never e-mailed you, so I guess you still have time to e-mail the other guy back.
