So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Well I was looking at the Big Eyed Fish tab that is here on the site and I noticed that some of the lines were incorrect so I took it upon myself to fix what was wrong, I did write my own version by the way. Anyhow there were parts missing in the original guitar tab part that were submitted so you guys can use this tab for a more accurate transcription (no offense to whomever wrote it as it helped me get a idea of what the tab should look like when its done just that there were a lot of notes that Dave plays that are missing). So enjoy this my friends, its pretty easy and just listen to the song to figure out what goes where.
Code: Select all
Big Eyed Fish - Studio version
Tabbed by Steve Oliver
This is a tab of DMB's Big Eyed Fish from Busted Stuff. Its pretty simple really once you get past some of the weird
fingerings that Dave does, although this is easy compared to most of his stuff. I have split the song up into parts and
separated the important segments, the violin and sax segments are tabbed out as well, listen for the harmonic though played
by Boyd on his violin, as it will be in the tab.
The song goes in order as such. The Intro and verse are the same, the same verse pattern is played 8 times in the beginning
and then the chorus phrase goes once which is just 4 bars. The chorus is just strummed quarter notes and the bridge is just a
sweep strum. Just listen too the song and you will pick up the order its not that hard really.
Intro/verse
--7\-------------------------7\-----------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------
--9\---5---5-----5-5-4-4-----9\-5---5-------5-5-4-4--
7-7\-3-3-3-3-----2-2-2-2-2/7-7\-3-3-3-3-----2-2-2-2--
0-0-----------x-x-----------0-0----------x-x--------------
Sax/Violin comes in on the verse after Dave has played the 4 bars the first time, Boyd and LeRoi do something like this but
arranged for guitar, it does appear later in the song. This phrase comes in at different parts during the tune and is
repeated 6 times on the outro to Bartender before going into the chordal finish which fades off.

That is essentailly the entire song, just listen to where the sections are supposed to come in, that covers all the important stuff
really. Enjoy.

thanks for taking the time to contribute. but i'm pretty sure that the tab on DMBtabs is correct. you added the hight E string basically is the only difference, and some vibratos.
dave does not play that high E string as far as i know. when you watch him play the song he uses his index and pinkey fingers to play the two strings, and therefore it would be pretty hard to hit the high E string.
i don't mean to bash the tab or anything. like i said, thanks for contributing, i just don't think this is the way DAVE plays it, which is what is on the main site here
anyone else?

I might be wrong, but kanter only tabs songs that he sees live/in videos, right? So I'd bet that the dmbtabs official version is pretty damn near to perfect.

Well I listened to the song and on the verse phrase, I believe in the first two bars Dave doesnt play the high E string but in the 3rd bar he does and through out the rest of the song. No offense unless you are deaf you cant miss him hitting the high E string on that phrase other than right at the beginning.

Just so you know, youre tabbing by ear on a studio version. Theres a lot going on, second guitar parts, boyd picking, just a bunch of different noises. Kanter tabs these songs by in concert videos of Dave actually playing these songs live.

To add to what people have said, I don't know what date Kanter tabbed from but I have D&T Big Eyed Fish and have played alon to the song using the tabs from this site and they are accurate.
I can't verify if they are accurate according to the studio version.

I will restate what has basically already been said, but the same mistake I have made. What is played on the albums is different than what is played live and all the tabs are for live performances. If you wanted to get technical, you could say all the tabs are wrong on grounds that they don't match the studio album. Take dreaming tree for example, the tab on the site doesn't include the 3 other guitar themes going on in the background. But in terms of what is played live, its extremely accurate. On a side note, now that I have incorporated singing into my dave covers, I see why he simplifies it when he plays live. Its really hard to sing one rhythm and play a different one on the guitar at the same time. That probably why a lot of the rhythms turn into simle strumming live.

This tab is completly wrong. The one Kanter has up on the site is 100 percent right.

Its not completely wrong, and you are wrong by saying that.

That tab is right if you want to paly the song a different way. And theres nothing wrong with doing that. Its just a different interpretation of the song. Now its not what Dave plays, but that doesnt mean its wrong. And dont take this as me calling you out or anything, Im just saying that his tab isnt completely wrong.

Yeah, seriously. The high note(s) you are hearing are just the octaves on the 12er...
