First open mic nite.....

Unread post by davescat » Fri Jan 20, 2006 7:07 pm

Every since I've moved to Tallahassee, FL to go to school, I've said that I'm gonna play at an open mic nite whenever I found one....Well, I finally found one and its on monday night! I'm not sure how many song they will let me play but im guessing that it will be no more than 3. I'm planning on playing Tripping Billies and the song by Phish called "Waste". Any recommendations for the final song? Remember, its a college town annnnnnd its in a bar hahaha.....any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chad

Play a song Dave hasn't written or covered. Unless of course you want a Dave-ish set. If that's the case, I would suggest Warehouse.

I would recommend another Phish song. A nice closer could be "Sleep"
"Come in from the cold for a while
Everything will be alright
Come in from the noise for a time
Everything will be alright..."

I have an extremely hard time singing while playing -- it's really aggrivating. My brain only lets me do one thing at a time.

Try playing while reading. It will help you to get down the doing more than one thing at a time thing.

Just an idea here, but I think The General by Dispatch would be a good open mic song to play....especially if you could get someone to play bongos or something along those lines

wow i can sing and play at the same time because there's at least some similarity like certain words being sang when you hit certain note and that helps you time when to sing as you play but i can't imagine just reading something completely different and playing at the same time

It helps to know the music front and back when you try doing this. If you know how to play the music without thinking about when to switch chords or thinking about the rhythm (sp?) it'll make it easier to concentrate on the singing part. As always it takes time and lots of practice and then one day it'll be "look what I can do!"
