if you can sing who cares if you sound like dave or not. you should develop your own style of singing. just my 2 cents, but if really want you could search the boards, im sure there is something

dont try to sing like dave.-- you dont have his voice, hence-- impossible-- like a fingerprint.
you can sing his stuff and take from it the useful techniques such as falsetto, scatting, wails...
but other than that be your own man! If you can sing well, then keep at it and you'll proably sound better than him--
because 50% of people who hear dave matthews band say, "I like the music, but his voice is SO aggravating!"
" I give up on this six string shit. "

Don't try and sing like Dave. It's cool sometimes if you try to convey how he sounds on a cover I suppose, but find your own voice.

I've noticed his tone and approach HAS changed over the years, but if you take into account his early influences, i.e. Marley, Gabriel, Sting you can get a gauge of what might have been going through his mind.

His tone and style is his own. 9 out of 10 I'd say that people that DON'T take a shine to DMB don't do so because of Dave's voice.

i agree, most people i know they dont enjoy the band say the exact same thing.

"The band is super talented, I respect the hell out of them musically, but I can't get into Dave's voice at all"

My gf who teaches music, gives voice lessons and used to sing Opera loves DMB. Having said that, she comments pretty frequently how Dave's technique is pretty poor. She is not saying he sounds terrible but doesn't do things right. I would probably look somewhere else to learn proper singing.

I think its all a matter of opinion. I mean one should work on their voice and of course you are going to sounds like the guy that wrote the song. But like someone said above your voice is alot like a fingerprint. Everyones is much different, thats what makes it neat.

I will ask for you. She doesn't listen to a whole lot of modern music besides DMB. I pretty much brain washed her and she has accepted the fact that if she is with me, she will listen to a lot of DMB and she will like it. She doesn't say all negative about him. Says he sings with a lot passion. That would be one thing you would want to emulate.

Brandon Boyd has one of the greatest voices, if not the greatest in my opinion. Hopefully there are no opera elitists here or anything...
