Just a thought... Cold & Grey

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Just a thought... Cold & Grey

Unread post by dmbjimmy » Mon Apr 21, 2003 12:57 am

after her
halloween
i'll back you up
lover lay down
let you down
Grey Street

what do these songs have in common?? There all about his love affair with, I think it was, Julie/Jean (that x-men movie is getting to me) Grey.

it makes me wonder.....

what about stay or leave??

Does this song fall into the batch of "Grey Songs?"

I can't help but make the correlation. What do you guys think? Is stay or leave about Ms. Grey again?

I think Dave is obsessed with this woman. Ya know, the one girl that got away kinda a thing. So much emotion can be brought into that.

Now I understand he is married and has kids but man this girl must have done a number on him, shit. I remember reading from the book "In the Spotlight" that he asked J. Grey to marry him 3 times, each of which he was turned down. Kinda sucks.

But anyway, back to the point. You guys think Stay or Leave is another Grey song? I mean, I don't see anything wrong with him using his past love life to drive is song writing today. I wonder if it pisses off his wife. hahaha.

Anway, tell me what you think.

** Just a side note, if you have any of the Cherry Lane tab books of DMB look at the company name on the bottem of any song transcribed.... "Cold & Grey" Kinda funny huh?****

I'll Back You Up and, subsequently, Halloween are the only songs I am 100% sure he wrote with Julie in mind. While I could see After Her, Lover Lay Down, and Let You Down relating to her, I've not read anything that really states this.

I do know that Grey Street was NOT refering to Julie but instead was a kind of tribute to the poet Anne Paxton. Don't ask me where I read this because it was a long time ago when Grey Street was starting to get big but if you read her biography you can start to draw the connections.

As for Stay or Leave....it's a beautiful song but right now the lyrics make it feel more of a depressive version of Say Goodbye.

In the end - who really knows what some of his songs are about. The beauty is that they are always open to interpetation - they mean many things to many people.

Kevin

Colden Grey is the name of Dave's publishing company...interseting play on words.

btw....I would add "Recently" to the list of Julie Grey songs and would agree that "After Her" was written about her as well, hence the lyric change to the somewhat nonsensical "Satellite".

yeah I think it was the book "Step into the light" I read the think lsat summer so I kinda forgot some info. But yeah like Kevin was saying...

"In the end - who really knows what some of his songs are about. The beauty is that they are always open to interpetation - they mean many things to many people."

its a good point, but I honestly see stay or leave being a Julie Grey song... I can't help it.

Anyway, thanks for the feed back.

her name is julia grey, not julie. and there's no proof that any songs other than ibyu and halloween are about her. i think its possible that lover lay down and let you down arent about a real person. also, a lot of people think the girl in grey street is julia, but really i think its dave. so just a few comments. on a side note, i've thought that pfwyg is about her as well ("everybody asks me how she's doing, has she really lost her mind?"), but i don't know.

Dudes, grey street, or gray street here in canada is about anne paxton. She was a suicidal poet. For sure, no doubt man. Daves mouth.

The song is GREY Street. While the spelling of the color grey/gray might change from country to country (or person to person) the name and spelling of the song doesn't. It's with an E no matter where you are
