what the heck is my right hand doing?
OK so I need advice from ya'll. How do you ever get your strumming hand to keep strumming? With all the mutes and things like that, I can hit the notes fine with my left and they sound okay, but I'm never moving my right hand enough, I can't get in the habit of moving it when im not hitting a note. What did you all do to keep strumming and not stop? I know that Dave goes crazy-go-nuts and doesnt stop strumming when hes playing and picks up and down, but my problem is always my strumming hand...so help! And just want to give props to jkanter, you make a kid that plays guitar for 8 months sound like hes been playing for 8 months, but because of your dominate Dave tabs, and that he can actually play some of it, his gf loves him. Your the man! Peace ya'll 8)
I'm only this far and only tomorrow leads my way

1st, great avatar. strongbad is awesome. 2nd, just to keep it going i simply pull my hand away from the strings if no muting is needed.

I had MAJOR problems with this in the beginning. Sounds just like me. At first when you play, you only move thy hand when a note is needed. Ah yes. BAD BAD BAD! My guitar teacher got me through this one. Its called rhythm. Keeping that right hand going at all times is all ALL rhythm. Its the rhythm of the whole song.
MY teacher told me that having your hand moving all the time is like "dancing to the song" almost. To learn to do it better, mute all the strings and just "dance." ...just strum blanks (called raking). do it for 5-10 minutes a day and you should pick up that rhythm in yer brain in a short time.
also, play in front of a mirror. the more your hand looks like dave's, the more you'll sound like him.
peace out

Most every guitar player you talk to will tell you that they were strumming way to fast and hard when they began...the only thing to be done is to start focusing on rythmn; if you listen to a complex strummer like Dave, you will hear how he keeps the rythmn going at all time, he just chooses or feels at what times to accent it...another thing that might help is resting the butt of your hand on the bridge...that will keep you from getting too carried away with it...just wait a while...you will get it

You mean Bill and Ted aren't cool anymore??winglet82 wrote:One thing that helped me was to strum to songs even when i wasn't playing the gutiar. Just strum to the beat when you listen to albums (not in front of people, of course, air guitar hasn't been cool since Bill and Ted's). That helped get rhythm into my head.

I can't believe that we would lie in our graves wondering if we had spent our living days well, and I can't believe that we would lie in our graves dreaming of things that we might have been...
Rub your stomach and pat your head. I like the mute the strings and strum
strum strum. when this is working add chords D switch G switch C and keep the strum pattern going all the time. This will become easier as you practice. Remember you never perfect a song until you can play it without thinking of the chord changes and you can sing along. So don't be surprised if you can't keep a strum pattern while you learn the hand placements and mutes. It will come.
