G:-----7----8/10-10--x-x-x
D:---8------8/10-10--x-x-x
A:-6-------------------x-x-x--
E:-------6--------------x-x-x--
my question is... Isn't dave really playing.....
E------x---x------x-x-----x----------
B---x--x---x-----x-x-----x----x-x-x--
G---x--x---7-----8/10---10---x-x-x---
D---x--8---------8/10---10---x-x--x-

he's doing a combination of things, most of which you don't really think about after playing for a while. Your second tab might be a little more accurate, but its understood that those strings shouldn't make sound so they aren't notated as muted. You also have to learn to control how far down you strum. while dave does strum a lot, he doesn't necessarilly strum every string for every stroke. He probably hits an "accidental" string or two per strum, but you don't even notice it because he mutes well.
Trapping, I believe, is when you mute with the palm of your right hand. Kind of like a palm-mute, except you don't anchor your hand on the bridge. Its more of just muting the strings closer to the sound hole as you strum. No tones should be produced, just a muted "chuck" kind of sound.

Yeah, dude. That strumming is crazy. Does anyone have any tips on getting Dave's style of strumming down?

try learning the stone, when doing so, attempt to strum the whole song. Every part. One thing I can notice when i play, when picking normal notes my pinky tends to anchor a little on the pick gaurd and the picking action comes from the movement in the wrist up and down (kinda of like shaking someones hand). When playing a dave tune my wrist rotates like rotating a door knob and none of my fingers are anchored. Hope that helpsduluoz wrote:Yeah, dude. That strumming is crazy. Yeah, I've been playing for over two years and I used to have trouble with even regular strumming when I began. Im fine at that sort of stuff, but when I decided to learn how to play all the Dave songs I know correctly (with the strumming) I get all jacked up. I'm trying The Stone, which I've known for like ayear, with all strumming. Do you just mute everything but what you play with the palm of your strumming hand or what?

Sorry i should've been a little more descriptive. When strumming, don't actually play all the strings, just the ones you're supposed to, but use the same action with the right hand as you would to strum. I tend to angle my pick a little upwards, i.e. if the pick was perpendicular to the body of the guitar, I angle the pick tip slightly upwards towards my face. It's kinda like a very controlled strum only playing the stings you're supposed to (and maybe a few extras sometimesduluoz wrote: Do you just mute everything but what you play with the palm of your strumming hand or what?
