Hi Guys
I have been progressing through a few Dave songs. The videos have been very helpful. One thing I am confused on is the muting. I tend to mute with my strumming hand however I seem to get the effect of "stopping" the sound instead of creating a muted strumming sound...which I know is correct. When I see XXXXX or any muting portion of tab..is this telling me basically to mute strings at any given fret and strum..giving that recognizable chunky slapping ?
Any other tips would be great.
Thanks
Dave
Muting
well, it depends, you can mute with your strumming hand aswell as your fretting hand.
For example, when i play 'the stone', i tend to mute the strings with my strumming hand, this way you don't have to be as precise hitting the right string, while if you play it without mute theres always the danger that you hit the right string but also hit the one just below that, creating a sound you really don't want
(same problem on 'rhyme & reason'). the trick is not to mute the strings too much... what you wanna do is mute the far end of the string by letting the side of your hand (below your pinky) rest on the pegs or just to the left of them (i hope you're still following
).
but with a chord like for example a typical dave D minor (10 8 X 10) like the first chord of 'two step', you mute the X with your index finger thats also playing the 8. Unless you're keeping your fingers dead straight on the strings, this should be somewhat natural.
hope this helped

Watch a video w/Dave playing solo. You may notice with Two Step like chords that the muted string marked by x is usually being barely touched by the finger fretting the bass note. There are also times when it appears that his hand is laying flat across the strings he is actually fretting maybe two notes and muting the rest of the strings with his other fingers.

notice the bird?
