halloween question :)

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

halloween question :)

Unread post by snoopdoug1 » Wed Apr 09, 2003 6:52 pm

Hey guys... after listening to hillbilly's halloween cover, and hearing a lot of people say it was pretty easy, I decided to try it.

Code: Select all

Verse
E:--------------------------
B:--------------------------
G:--------------------------
D:---------9-9--10-10--x-x--
A:----2\8--x-x--x--x---x-x--
E:-1-------7-7--8--8---x-x--
   1 (2)
This is the part I'm working on. Listening to hillbilly's cover, I don't hear the two xxx and xxx at the end. Tell me if I'm understanding this right please :) You pick E1, then pick A2 and slide to A8(you must have to have SUPER fast hand to do this?). Then, if I hear it right, the 9x7 and 9x7, then 10x8 and 10x8. So the sturmming pattern seems easy. Pick, pick + slide, downstrum, downstrum, downstrum, downstrum(or down,up,down,up... haven't figured it out yet). Is that right? If so, then I just need to get to where I can make that 2/8 fast enough :) Any good ways to practice slides?

I appreciate all your help guys! :)

its ALL strum. Strum the WHOLE thing, and it will come together. Use that rule for 75% of all dave songs.

What do you mean it's all strum? Even the first E1 note?

No, seriously. Just beat the fuck out of your strings on Halloween. The two x strums at the end just make up a "chick-a." Just say that out loud fast to get what I'm talking about. Muting on this song is relatively easy since the single notes are on the top two strings, and there's only two of those single strum-picked notes.

yeah, those two strums are down down like you said...the whole verse is down strumming...you definately want to just beat the strings- that s the fun in this song...i covered it a while ago (my very first cover ever on these boards actually) and it is very fun...especially if you dont hold back and just scream...yes that slide is fast...listen to luther college, you can hear it very easily.

I play it like this

Code: Select all

Verse
E:------------------------------
B:------------------------------
G:------------------------------
D:-3--xx-------9-9--10-10--x-x--
A:-x--xx--2\8--x-x--x--x---x-x--
E:-1--xx-------7-7--8--8---x-x--
   1 (2)
And I do a downstrum first, then down up on the mutes, then pick the a-string 2 and slide to 8 then your first and third finger are pretty much there and ready for the 7x9--- chord which I strum down twice for, then down twice for 8x10--- then down up on the muted strums and repeat. If you dont wanna do the first to mutes I added (which I hear when he plays) just do the strums the way I stated. Also, I believe the first chord of the verse used to be the way I have it shown on this site a while ago wasnt it, anyways it sounds good/better and makes it easier to play I think.

p.s. I could record a quick little sound file of it and send it to you if you need it.

A sound file would be GREATLY appreciated... don't know if I'll do those two mutes at the start, but we'll see how it sounds :)

thats a really good explanation, there are definately those two mutes in the beginning...but i disagree with the first chord...but you are right, it can sound good...for the last chords, the first and third are in perfect placement for them, but dave does use the first and fourth fingers...i always used the first and third, but i sometimes had a problem with hitting open strings (muting problem)
