big eyed fish. hehe
if you wanna get good you just have to run at the brick wall. try something like satellite or even WWYS to get your fingers moving. wwys will sound like shit for a long time, but it's good practice.
unfortunately learning a song the whole way through because dave doesn't have many that are completely easy...like, the chorus to tripping billies is easy but the verse is killer, the verse to granny is easy but the chorus has some funny shapped chords that take a while to get. same with lover lay down.
crash isnt too hard and will help you with strumming. it will also help you learn to deal with searing pain in your wrist.
what songs do you already know? we can build off that...

"Forget about what you are escaping from," he said, quoting an old maxim of Kornblum's. "Reserve your anxiety for what you are escaping to."

The easiest songs are those that you know by heart.
Some easiER songs that help unlock some of the "Dave Basics" are #40, Bartender, Gravedigger, some covers like the Maker and Watchtower are easier to pick up as well. Those are some starters for you.
If I can help you with anything drop me a line.
Peace,
C
BTW - Great influences on your myspace page, have you heard Talking Heads Remain in the Light?

I agree about diving head first into it... 1st song I ever learned was The Stone, 2nd was Trippin billies... and those are definitely 2 of the hardest out there. I'm not talking about 1st and 2nd dave songs, I'm talking about period, I didn't even know what a D chord was before I came to dmbtabs.com. Its VERY rough at the beginning, especially if you're new to guitar... but now about 8 months later I can play almost every song on this site... after 4-5 months I started getting to the point in which I was becoming adept in doing the follow things, and I urge you to practice similar songs to learn some of the same things...
Learn to deal with your hand being cramped in 1 position for 5 minutes straight - Crash Into Me
Learn to stretch your hand down the fretboard and comfortably be able to move it into another position - Trippin billies & Satellite
Learn to keep better tempo - The Stone & Proudest Monkey (Btw, proudest monkey for me was an extremely hard song to learn to play & sing at the same time, I kept wanting to rush it) also So Damn Lucky might be a good choice here...
Learn to mute - Stay (wasting time) and Jimi Thing (I like to mute on JT during the verse, maybe that's just me...)
Learn to fingerpick - Everyday, Grace is Gone, and Where are You Going (I recommend trying WAYG first then one of the other 2, GiG is not exactly the easiest fingerpicking song to learn, especially if you're learning to sing with it while learning the song...)
Learn to strum and hit only certain strings while doing so - Crash Into Me, Warehouse, JTR. I recommend learning them in that order...
Learn to do that neat little percussion sound that dave does - Jimi Thing, Say Goodbye, & Ants Marching **EDIT** I'm gonna throw Minarets in this category, if you listen to the L@LC version you'll see what I mean.
Finally if you want a good song to practice, just to get used to a couple of new chord positions or whatever you might not be used to... I recommend learning Stay or Leave.
Now... to answer your original question, easy songs...
#1 The Song That Jane Likes (Without a doubt easy, if you've never played guitar before this is a very basic song)
#2 Typical Situation
#3 Two Step
#4 Dancing Nancies
#5 Captain/Crazy
These 5 should be easy to learn for anyone with even a month's guitar experience and you shouldn't have any problem. They all have basic chord positions and nothing too fancy.
If you got any questions or want some help IM me @ DMBPokerFan86

ok i don't know what your talking about. Captain/crazy in the top 5 easiest song to play? Yeh not even close. Once you can stretch, it is very easy because the chord maintains the same shape, but the stretch is the hardest part for beginners. So why not replace that with Christmas song or Where are you going?

Oh, I just looked @ your picture... Please don't take offense to this, the picture's a weird angle... But if you're a girl and have fairly small hands, you might want to disregard some of the things in my previous thread. My friend allie is a great guitar player and she can strum/mute like no other, but there's no way she'll ever be able to play satellite or trippin billies etc. the way dave does. You really shouldn't have a problem with any of the 5 easy songs I listed though, and they're some of my favorite.

I agree, Captain is a pain in the ass for beginners. And he also said Two Step, which I think is pretty hard to play because the rhythm can throw a lot of people off. If I were you I would start with these, and like checkii said learn the whole song.
1. Proudest Monkey
2. Typical Situation
3. The Dreaming Tree
4. Dancing Nancies
5. Grey Street
6. Diggin a Ditch
7. Big Eyed Fish
8. Bartender
9. Christmas Song
10. Halloween

hey now
for a girl, i have really big hands. not like "big" manly hands, but long, slender fingers and all that jazz. i can stretch pretty well amazingly enough...not becuase of skill, just because of my massive hands. ha.
alright, i'm going to give these a try. thanks
what about my picture at a weird angle? looks wierd? should i do a different picture?

For us living any other ways was nuts. with all the goodie-goodies working shitty jobs for bum pay checks, took the subway work and worried about their bills were dead. they were suckers, they had no balls. if we wanted something we just took it, and if anybody complained twice they got hit so hard believe me they never complained again
