Just Plain Ouch

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Just Plain Ouch

Unread post by CPTino3001 » Mon Nov 04, 2002 10:33 pm

I have been playing for about a month now. I've got the hang of: Crash, Typical, STJL, and I'm so so on Seek Up. I tried to play #41, and the intro stretch is near impossible for me and extremely painful after a few sec. I must say I was not blessed with large hands. Do I just need to keep at it?

Yes, just keep working at it. But don't push your hands too hard - it's a gradual process, and you don't want to injure yourself.

I have small hands/short fingers as well, and I can get #41 no problem. Just takes time to stretch everything out. You'll be amazed how much your reach increases.

put your fingers through little stretching excercises, but not to the point of pain. Fingers are just like your legs the more you stretch the further you can go, it's like teaching your fingers to do the splits.... HA HA.

No. Give up now. It is impossible. I've been playing about a year and a half and I have huge hands, and cannot get those first chords.

It's impossible. :(

StarSlight,

Some great words of encouragement there :?

CPTino3001, just keep at it. Yours hands will soon become more flexable, and Dave's reaches will not seem as hard. But damn, how can he manage to sing at the same time. :D

Hope that helps. :D
Yes, I am Indian and I play the guitar. Believe It.

8) Dave's chord stretches take a LOT of practice. Like anything worthwhile if you want to be good, PRACTICE :!: I started playing guitar freshman year in high school a long time ago. I'm 40 now and I still had trouble when I first started learning Dave's songs. Keep on doing it. Relax your shoulders and arms as much as possible any tension will increase fatigue in your forearm and hand muscles. As far as singing when you play... Again, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.. I practiced #41 for months before I could play it all the way through and for months before I could sing and play all the way through. It can be done. If an old dog like me can do it... you young dave and davette's should have no problem getting there.

Playing #41 isn't too hard, practice at Satellite.. my left hand hurt for a week after I first started that song..
My question is, can anyone manage to play Warehouse correctly and can tell me how to. I'm a moderate to experienced guitar player now but I haven't been able to figure out how to get the muted sound with the open B notes simultaneously, though I can make the hand movements and pick it properly.

the way i play it is, i play the first note with my index finger and mute with the index as well. then, after you're done with that note, just lift the tip of your index finger and kind of barre all the strings, except mute them, then use your other fingers to play the notes. just mute a lot, and most of all, practice a lot.

i hope that helps,

jon

Try these chords and see if it works for you (this is the way I play it)-

--0----0----0----2--
--3----3----3----3--
--0----2----0----2--
--2----0----2----0--
--0----2----2-------
-------------0-------

It sounds pretty good, and that's what I got when I figured out L@LC before I started visiting the old Dmbtabs.com. You can play around with that D, too, and throw in some suspended 4ths and stuff. Hope that helps...

I am tall but I have small hands. It used to hurt quite a bit when i plaed 41 but not i doesnt at all. I think it just takes time to stretch it out.

for the lon stretches, try bringing your elbo in towards the body of the guitar more. this allows your fingers to stretch in a more comfortable manner
