The change in daves guitar play over the years...
The change in daves guitar play over the years...
i was just thinking how i wish that dave would kinda go back to his roots for an album.... i like the new stuff, but its not the same as the songs that sucked me in like on R2T, UTAD, and Crash.....
one thing ive notcied is that on the earlier albums, the guitar is more catchy and dynamic.... i used to listen to the albums so much that i knew the guitar parts just as well as i knew the lyrics... and that was before i started playing....i would actually find myself singing the guitar parts out loud in between the lyrics.....
now i know there is a natural progression as a muscian....
but what does everyone esle think? do you want to see more of daves progression as hes been doing? or do you want to see an old school type DMB album in the furture?

i kind of agree in some ways. I mean the new album lacked colorful guitar licks. I dont know if the band still has it in them to make great songs that us fans adore (two step, warehouse, LIOG, etc..). I dont think that they have put that music behind them because they still play them live. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Dave has used the same "core group" of chords for many years, often not using the simple open chords that most of learn when we are just starting out. Could he just want to try something different? It's possible.
I try to think of it like this. If you are an artist, usually your first couple of recorded albums are the best of your material if not all of it. To come up with new material that's good is difficult, thus many bands are one hit wonders if you will.
I think the first several DMB releases are some of Dave's best guitar work, but nobody has to use fancy chords and voicings to get the point across ala Neil Young.

This is an interesting album. Almost none of the songs are typical, because most only incorporate a few instruments at a time. A lot of the famed jam songs like Two Step, Ants Marching, and Trippin' Billies are deemed classics because they incorporate all the instruments. Pretty much the only song on this album where you can say that is Hello Again. However, in most of the songs that include just a few instruments, the guitar is not the main one. It seems while this be less of a "band" album, it is definately less of a "Dave" album. Perhaps if this was dmbsaxtabs.com we would be psyched about the new album. I think its still great music, and definately love some of the songs, especially You Might Die Trying and Everybody Wake Up, but it is certainly different from his previous offerings. Less Dave, less band altogether.

a lot of the reason i think most of us dont get into the new material as much is because the musc isnt road tested like a majority of the really stand out tunes. a lot of the stuff had been played live for years before it was actually put onto a major released record. for instance when you listen to something like the rutabega studio demos and the ardent studio demo and then listen to some of those songs when they worked with a true producer and had played the songs 100's of times before they put it on the majorly released records. the songs grew and grew from the early stuff. it seems like now it is very rushed and they build the songs after they put them on the cd, and then tour with the new material
Well...overall things have def changed, but it's by no means bad. Hell, YOU KNOW the first time you heard that opening riff to Dreamgirl when you popped in the album...you were mildly excited.
I think that riff sums up the album really. It's not overly complex or anything, but just fun.
I personally think if ANYTHING has fallen in quality over since the beginning of DMB is has been the lyrical aspects. Obviously Dave is in a different place now then he was 13 years ago, but basically every song is talking about finding a loved one, running after your love, sleeping with her, dancing with her...give me another Cry Freedom and I'd be the happiest person ever. A good guitar song with unreal lyrics. Another PIG...another Dreaming Tree...another Typical(Guitar is obviously sick also).
The lyrical aspects are what drew me closest to DMB after guitar and I think it's faltering a little. Not so much in a bad way...it's just different and Dave is in a different place

im just curious as to how dave and the band will progress in the future
It's funny you mention Everybody Wake Up, that happens to be the song that I like the lyrics of the most. The reasons are kinda personal, so I can imagine why most people would find it unimpressive. I think on his more recent albums he's just sitting down and writing what he feels, rather than trying to be poetic about it. I mean, obviously there is a place for both. Bob Dylan lives as arguably the greatest lyricist of all times, and a lotta his stuff was just playing with words, really lacking a central meaning.

i dont think another catchy guitar lick-filled album will happen again
For us living any other ways was nuts. with all the goodie-goodies working shitty jobs for bum pay checks, took the subway work and worried about their bills were dead. they were suckers, they had no balls. if we wanted something we just took it, and if anybody complained twice they got hit so hard believe me they never complained again

i only skimmed the thread...so don't shoot me if i'm repeating some of other people's stuff.
i think mainly its just that dave has run out of ideas. he's just run out of the juice. i'm talking about guitar though. i sitll think he's capable of MUCH better than what he's writing right now. i just think he needs to try a little harder.

I disagree. I don't think have has run out of ideas. If anything, old age and arthiritis are keeping him from coming up with cool riffs like that in The Stone. Looking at the new album, I think a fair amount of stuff sticks with typical Dave guitar parts.
For example, YMDT shares a lot of similarites with what I like to think of as his "two string" songs. These are the songs where you rarely hit more than two strings at a given time. Examples? Pig, Stay and Minarets to some extent.
I'm working right now, but I could keep going. Let me know if I may be off base with this train of thought.
