Variations to Lie In Our Graves jam

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Variations to Lie In Our Graves jam

Unread post by uhgotnegum » Wed May 25, 2005 1:54 am

This was a long time coming, and the results certainly don't reflect it. If for some strange reason you like these, let me know. It'll make me feel good that the really long time I spent typing all this out wasn't a complete waste of time.

Enjoy!

Code: Select all

Other things to do during Lie In Our Graves Jam
by Cody Lawson

--Sorry if you don't get my instructions. This is the first time I've tried to explain something I've done (with original inspiration from Dave, of course).

VARIATION 1
First part
E:-------------------------
B:-10---10--7---3---3---5-- <---2 or 3
G:-11---9---7---4---4---6-- <---2 or 3
D:-X----X---X---X---X---X--
A:-X----X---X---X---X---X--
E:-10---9---7---3---3---5-- <---1

Second part
E:-------------------------
B:-12---7---5---2---2---3-- <---2 or 3
G:-12---7---6---2---2---4-- <---2 or 3
D:-X----X---X---X---X---X--
A:-X----X---X---X---X---X--
E:-12---7---5---2---2---3-- <---1

VARIATION 2
First part w/ more stuff (I use more of a strumming rhythm w/ this, but still keep the same timing as if doing the normal jam)

Note 1: I strum Down on the main chord and then D,U,U,D on the high E chords for part 1 and 3 (numbered below). Strum Down on the main chord and Up on the high E chord for part 2.

Note 2: Super stretch required for third high E chord. If you can't do it as is,try ignoring either the G or B string, but it does lose some if you do.

E:------12--------12-------10------5-------7-- <---4
B:-10---10---10---10---7---7---3---3---5---5-- <---2 or 3
G:-11---11---9----9----7---7---4---4---6---6-- <---2 or 3
D:-X----X----X----X----X---X---X---X---X---X--
A:-X----X----X----X----X---X---X---X---X---X--
E:-10---10---9----9----7---7---3---3---5---5-- <---1

|-------------1-----------| |--2--| |--3--|

Second part w/ more stuff (again, use strumming rhythm)
Note 1: 1 and 3 the same as above. Part 2, just like Dave.

E:------14-------10------7---------------5-- <---4
B:-12---12---7---7---5---5---2---2---3---3-- <---2 or 3
G:-12---12---7---7---6---6---2---2---4---4-- <---2 or 3
D:-X----X----X---X---X---X---X---X---X---X--
A:-X----X----X---X---X---X---X---X---X---X--
E:-12---12---7---7---5---5---2---2---3---3-- <---1

|------------1-----------| |--2--| |--3--|

VARIATION 3
First part
Note 1: This is basically like the above variation but softer sounding (only using the high strings) and with a little more crap that I think sounds good.

Note 2: For the pull offs, I just bar the fret with my index finger

Note 3: If you actually understand the rythm I'm going for, picking variations sound pretty good too.

E:------12--------12---12p9----9/10-------5-------7--7p5-- <---4
B:-10---10---10---10---10------7------3---3---5---5--5---- <---1 or 2
G:-11---11---9----9----9-------7------4---4---6---6--6---- <---1 or 2

Second part

E:------14-------9/10-------7---7p5--------------5---5p3-- <---4
B:-12---12---7---7------5---5---5----2---2---3---3---3---- <---1 or 2
G:-12---12---7---7------6---6---6----2---2---4---4---4---- <---1 or 2

It would be a good idea to learn all the different shapes and positions of those chords in the previous post. Try Playing them in first position as open chords. THis will help you understand the guitar, and the song better. Just play w the CD. I decided to make a basic tab of what i do when i gig. THis is meant to give the song more texture and color when being played by one guitar. If you just play daves chords over and over again, w no lead, the song will get stale very quickly. Hope this is useful to some.

first part: ( ^ <-- this means hammer-on)
-numbers in ( ) are optional, but sound cool when done right.
-thumb on lowE string

D C#m Bm G A
-------------------------------------------------
-10---------9------------7--------3------5-------
-9^(11)----9^(11)-----7--------2(4)---4(6)--------
-12--------11-----------7^(9)---5------7-------
-x----------x------------x--------x------x--------
-10---------9------------7--------3------5-------

NOTE: -To play the D, the G and A, use these fingers:
thumb-lowE ; pinky-D ; index-G ; middle-B ; ring-hammer-ons

-The C#m and B# shouldnot be too difficult to play, you can bar
the middle three strings w your index finger.

second part:

Em Bm A D/F# G

-0--------0(10)----------10------0-----------------
-0--------8-------10-----12------5-----3------3---
-12-------7-------7------11------6-----2------0---
-x---or---9-------9--or--9-------7-----4------5--
-10-------x-------x------9-------x-----x------x---
-12-------0-------7------0-------5-----2------3----

NOTE: Here i gave two ways to play the Em and Bm in the second
progression. You have to use your thumb (not Em) for most.
Just find a way that you feel comfortable with.

Good luck. This is just a basic idea. Play around with the notes in ( ), or any other notes in the scale or key. This makes the jam sound full when being played by one guitar. Its adds flavor and character.

Real players use their thumb.

Kudos dudes. I think it's one thing to really like a band and play there stuff... but there are limits. I think some people who frequent these boards have passed those limits, and I'm glad to see some people are putting their own spin on the music. I think that's the way it should be. It's good music, but we should make it our own.
