I'm having a lot of trouble playing #41 solo on acoustic guitar. I think since the song is so driven by all the instruments, its hard to really capture it on just guitar. I was wondering how you all would suggest playing #41 acoustically, and having it sound full. Is there some chord progression which is best? I noticed that dave plays something chord-like in his performance of it on letterman..... but anyway, let me know - I'd really love to learn it!

On the Letterman performance, he plays it just like always. I just watched it (after reading your post) and it's just like always.
Sometimes during the verse when playing solo you'll wanna add a few more strums here and there just to fill out the sound. But just practice practice practice and it'll come.

Also, if playing solo..it's worht the extra effort to learn and master playing the intro chords as the verse chords. the version on L@LC is a perfect example for this...it provides all the fullness you need. He uses two different strumming patterns....the intro and the verse, both emphasizing a certain stroke during each chords strumming. Again..listen to the acoustic dave...
I played what he plays with the band for a long time because I couldn't get the chord changes down fast enough to play the intro chords as the verse. But once you get it..it's second nature...and it adds so much more to the song and really lets you get creative!

are you trying to imply that he uses the intro chords for the verse on live at luther college? i hope not...
anyway, if you want a more full sound, let the verse chords ring throughout the riff, instead of muting them like dave usually does..

My #41 Verse. YEAH!!!
This is what I've always done during the verse to make it sound fuller when playing solo(oh that didn't sound right).
I then use my middle finger to mute the low E. I think it sounds good, but thats just me.

A----7-7-----------7-------5---------
E--5-------7-------0-------x---------

i like the sound of that fretted A string instead of muting it. pretty cool - don't know why i never thought of that.Darklight1701 wrote:This is what I've always done during the verse to make it sound fuller when playing solo(oh that didn't sound right).

Does he not?? Sure doesn't sound like just the three note verse chords played with the band. He uses the same chords as in the intro, but using a slightly different strumming pattern in order to emphasize a different downstroke.are you trying to imply that he uses the intro chords for the verse on live at luther college? i hope not...
Atleast that's what it sounds like to me??

YOU ARE RIGHT my man
my fault, I listened agian...I i can distinctly hear the fingerings on the B and G strings remain consistent throughout the verse chords.. Damn I can't believe this, I musta been hearing timmy the whole time or something? Those two are so tricksy together
Anywho...I still say when playing solo, play the verse using the intro chords. If you match dave's verse strumming pattern (different than the intro) with the intro chords, man it's a very "full" and pleasing sound. Maybe I'll try to get an audio file of me playing it the way I'm talking about 8)
