LIOG, I would assume you could just play a D major scale maybe experiemnt with D minor pentatonic.

I wonder if Dave will be able to tune his guitar this year to Drop d without any help. iswear it takes him forever when he has to manually tune.KahnTheRevelator wrote:dude, i heard some guy named Dave something did that, and got really famousjellyfish wrote:You know some of us here don't really give a shit about the theory involved. for those of us trying to become proficient in guitar theory...what's your best suggestion? private lessons? a book? a DVD? i've been playing almost a year and want to take my playing up a few notches, and knowing some theory would probably be pretty key to my development (no pun intended).mlb1399 wrote:I believe Tim plays a D mixolydian scale for warehouse.

If you want to learn some scales and step up your playing a little bit, check out this website called jamcenter.com... it's got a lot of good info on scales and being able to play good lead. It has these jam machines that you can use too. You pick a genre of music, and the key that you want to jam in and it will play a backing track for you to jam to. It also shows you scales that work for each jam track if you click on the suggested scale part of the jam machine. There are also alot of books out there. If your short on cash, you can check out free video lessons on a tablature site called ultimate-guitar.com. On the main page, go to the lower right corner for the videos section and check out the video lessons they have. There are 2 guys that give lessons and they are both pretty good. Each video is a seperate subject (chord progressions, harmonics, etc.) Definately worth checking out. Hope this helps.fimester wrote:for those of us trying to become proficient in guitar theory...what's your best suggestion? private lessons? a book? a DVD? i've been playing almost a year and want to take my playing up a few notches, and knowing some theory would probably be pretty key to my development (no pun intended).mlb1399 wrote:I believe Tim plays a D mixolydian scale for warehouse.

Just for information... a D major scale would sound fine over the song which is in the key of B minor (D's relative minor), but B minor and D minor are not the same at all. D minor is the key of F (one flat- B), and that would be rather conflicting sounding over the chords in warehouse (which are B minor and G mostly).
I have no idea what a mixolydian scale is. But... in the key of B minor here is some general hierarchy of the "importance" of notes, as I see them:
1. B (root)
2. D (fifth/dominant)
3. F# (minor 3rd)
4. G (4th/subdominant)
5. A, C#, E
6. Everything else (these would be "accidentals", but could be good accent notes).
The higher up on the heirarchy the note is, the more "resolving" the note will do. if you end a run with a whole note of a Bb it is going to sound pretty conflicting, but if you end a fast run on a D note, it will resolve a lot more. It depends on the sound you are looking for. Hope that helps a little?
