working on crash...

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

working on crash...

Unread post by snoopdoug1 » Sat Mar 29, 2003 1:12 pm

How long does it take you guys to learn a song? I listen to the songs on the recording board, and they sound amazing to me. Granted I'm a huge newbie, but it's taking me forever to even learn crash. I want to be able to play it all the way through, and sing... but it doesn't seem like that will ever be possible. I can't seem to get any kind of rhythm down.

I tried to play along with the song like some people suggested, but I can't hear the song, I only hear myself playing? I know you just say turn it up, but I'm in an apartment... Any suggestions?

Thanks

Try using some headphones, and mess with the volume there - to find a medium between your guitar and a recording. That's what I did sometimes. Best of Luck

I promise

As someone who has been playing 8 months now, and learned Crash as his first Dave song, I PROMISE you you will be able to eventually. I can't do the 5th fret version, but that's only because I can't switch into it fast enough after doing the E-Chord transition. But at first, I was able to play it but never sing. Then slowly but surely I was able to sing with it. Now I can play the whole way through without my hand cramping and sing too. You'll get there, I promise. Practice honestly makes EVERYTHING possible.

Crash was the second song that i learned, and was definitely the one that took the longest to learn, so i know what you mean...i listened and watched dave play that for weeks, not being able to understand the rythm..but rest assured, there will be one time when you literally all of a sudden understand it..

Crash was the first song I learned. Unfortunately, I dont' know what to tell you - the rhythm came very easily to me.

Of course, I've noticed that my right hand is definitely not what holds me back in guitar playing, for what's it worth.

The rhythm actually came very easy for me. But, I got very good with rhythm very quickly. It was playing Parappa the Rapper as a kid that did it;) My left hand work is far worse though, and don't even get me started with a pick. I LOVE using my fingers, but I hate the pic. Anyway, the rhythm will come, I promise. If you keep practicing, it is literally impossible that it will not come, you know? I played it a ton, and I'd say it took me a good five months on and off till I was able to play Crash to the point where I was proud of it. Just keep playing, and NEVER get discouraged, because practice can fix most anything. Of course, I still can't mute for crap, and play Tripping Billies with chords:) but I'll get there in time:) Hope that helps, and feel free to ask, from one newbie to another.

Here is what I did to try and get that song. Play with the recording (I used L@LC, its faster but easier to hear), try playing just the bass notes while your hand is still in the position of playing the other strings( just hold them there). Break the song into 2 parts, the high and lows (bass).Work on getting the bass past down pat and then slowly add on the rhythm of the other strings. Don't try and strum the whole thing at once but listen to how the song fits in around the bass notes. You can switch in between the high and the low parts and the work them in with each other.
I have no idea if that makes sense but its what I did awhile back when the rhythm was kicking my ass, I just broke the song in two, and it worked, give it a try.

that's good advice...getting those bass notes down first...and then fitting the rythm in between each pick of the notes

i dont really remember the number of dave songs i had down when i learned crash, but, i remember a friend of mine who was really good, and he played it, and, i could play it, but, he kept saying i was missing something with the strumming, i could not figure it out for a while, cuz i was a novice at the time, but now i know, i couldnt get the accurate strumming down, and i started to realize as i played along, and one day i caught the pattern, and had it,

i rarely play crash, i dont know why, not a bad song, but, i have heard it so much....

Thanks guys! I guess I'll just keep practicing :) Good advice on the bass notes!

So here's the strumming pattern I do.
Bass, down,up,down,up
Bass, down, up
repeat

Anyone know if that is right? Or is that what anyone else does?

Thanks!

I do Bass: Down up down up
Bass Down Down up

Repeat.
Sometimes I'll only do one downstroke after the second bass note.

repeat
