in jazz chord terminology, it's an A9

That chord as diagramed consists of; A C# G C Natural......it has both major and minor tonality, because of the C# and C Natural......the G is the seventh......kinda funky sounding......but not a minor 9th chord.....not sure as to what I would call this one.jtdevan wrote:that is an A9th chord. They sound awesome. Even better is a minor ninth chord.
for an Am9:
X
13
12
11
12
X

yeah I don't believe that's Am9 as there's no 9th interval in the chord. that chord contains a major 3rd, minor 7th, and a minor 3rd. A pretty funky chord indeed. not usual to see a major 3rd and a minor 3rd in the same chord (is it a major or a minor?jtdevan wrote:that is an A9th chord. They sound awesome. anyway, I'd call this chord an Am9: x-0-5-4-5-7 or 5-x-5-5-5-7 (thumb on low E, index barres 5-5-5, and pinky on 7)
good, and you?
my theory is a bit rusty as i am doing this in my head.
if you named it by the C# then it would be a C#dim,addm6add7 (where root=C#, dim5=G, m6=A, 7=B#=C) with the 6th as the base note. but i don't like having a diminished chord with a major 7th. let's try Db.
as Db it would be 2nd inversion DbAug,add4,add7 (where root=Db, Aug5=A, 4=G, 7=C). This might work.
or even a Gdim,add2add4 (where root=G, dim5=Db=C#, 2=A, 4=C) but i don't like that at all. mostly because your bass notes are the 2nd and 4th. that's not good.
you can't have a chord that is both major and minor. it's gotta be one.
if you wanna name it based on the A then it would be either an Am7adddim4 (where root=A, m3=C, 7=G, dim4=Db) or an A7addAug2 (where root=A, M3=C#, 7=G, Aug2=B#=C). this would depend on what key you are in as to what to name it.
i'd rather think of it (as far as naming) as a Db chord and as a second choice the A7addAug2. but again this depends a lot on where it is in a song and what is going on around it (ie VofV, melodies, or cadences, etc) but we won't get into that.

yesterday i was trying to build a scale around this thing. when i listen to that arrangement of notes the "tonal center" does feel like A. the scale i came up with is Bb melodic minor (Bb C Db Eb F G A Bb). so in this scale i'm going with Am7adddim4.
but as i listen to it, it does sound major so i like what grave is saying. so stand alone i would call it A7,b10.
and naming is not necessarilly to make it easier. it's just to make it easier to talk about it in words. easier is where musical notation and music reading come in. i think a pianist would be perfectly fine just seeing 4 dots up on his music stand to play. (i totally said pianist)
but regardless, grave i think you win the prize for easiest naming, winglet gets the prize for showing me how wrong i was with the Db (so so wrong) and i'm gonna take 1 point for putting it into a scale.
so can anyone think of a better name for A C#/Db G and a B#/C? or have we beat this one to death?
yeah i agree, it is definately dead.

Am7Adddim4.... i wish i knew how to name chords like that... probably very confusing.
